Itinerary advice for a soon to be mom!
Hi,
My husband and I have been planning on visiting India since January and only have one month left before the big trip! I don't have to tell you we are getting very excited. Well, we had a big wonderful surprise this week- I am pregnant! This means that I will not be ale to take the malaria pill in the first three months of pregnancy (i.e, during our planned trip). We would still like to go to India and as the mosquito that carries the parasite that causes malaria cannot live over 2000 meters above sea level we were thinking of switching our itinerary and staying in Dharamshala, Manali, Shilma and maybe even going to Leh. However, I have no idea how the altitude will affect me. Any suggestions on malaria free places in India would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Monique |

You will have to fly to Delhi to get to those places, so a few day's below 2000 meters is necessary. But there's over 1 billion Indians and most survived without malaria problems. But the places you've mentioned sound better for not catching it. I've never gotten malaria in my many years of traveling. And never took any meds for it. But since your pregnant I understand your concern. I would definitely stock up on repellant. But ask you doc first if repellant is harmful. Repellent with DDT in it might not be good for a pregnant person. Baby oil is supposed to be good.
A net, repellent and coils will help. But someone with more knowledge about this should be along shortly. And me and the mother of my daughter was traveling in Thailand and Sumatra when she was pregnant. And my daughter was born in Sumatra and we had no problems. We even had our own island that was full of mosquitos at night and no problems. But were maybe just lucky. |

I 2nd Ananda2193. My doctors always tell me not to get any malaria medicines when I am travelling North India (Gujarat, Mumbai, Delhi and so on). They have advised me on South India though.
Congrats to you and your husband! ![]() |

Thanks very much for replying! Hearing about your personal experience makes me feel a lot more comfortable about travelling in the north, but I will still check with my doctor.
Cheers, Monique Ps goddess you say...hum I could get use to that kind of treatment! |

Well Shashank I dont realy agree with you..it so happened that once I was traveling in DTC bus and there was this pregnant woman standing...I got up from the ladies seat and offered her so that she could sit..to my astonishment a man walked up and sat there..When i asked him to get up as it was a seat reserved for woman folk and specifically coz I had left it for the expecting Mom he refused bluntly...The worse was that later I discovered to get the shock of my life that HE WAS THE HUBBY OF THAT WOMAN...and she requested me to be quiet and let him sit...probably because she din want that later he ill treats her..When her own hubby did this to her can we expect something kind & nice from other folks.....
Sorry folks if I went off the topic |
