Is it possible or am I mad?!?!

Namaste All,

Ok here I go. I will be venturing to india from mid march to early may.(Yeah i know it will be the hot months, but i'm from Florida).

I have a $7000 dollar american budget and will hope to fly as much as possible, train as little as possible and hire a driver when I reach rishikesh to venture on the char dham.

Ok here it goes.

I want to start off in Chennai, visit arunachaleshwar, chidambaram and other temples in northern tamil nadu for a week. Then off to Kanhangad, Kerala for 2-3 days and up to goa for 2 - 3 days. Then venture to ellora maharashtra for 3 days and up to Ujjain and Omkareshwar for 3-4 days. Then to Haridwar for 1 week, down to Varansi for 1 week, maybe Agra and Mathura on the way back up to rishikesh and spend sometime in uttaranchal for a week or so.

I may wanna stretch my time out a little more instead of limiting myself to only 2 to 3 days. Im hoping to fly to cut down on travel time since i'll have the cash to do so.

Does this look doable?

Thanks guys and gals!

-D

I think you can fly and take taxis and manage with your budget. Most likely your hotel bills will be a deciding factor here. From your plans, looks like you will be in India for 5-8 weeks, if you make sure you don't stay in expensive hotels(Budgeting at Rs.1000-1500/night may be ideal) and you should be able to make it comfortably within your budget.

If you hire a taxi from Chennai, you can spend a day in Kanchipuram, drive down to Tanjavur on day 2 maybe stay there for the night and drive to Kumbakonam on Day 3 morning and maybe Thiruvarur that evening, Day four you can be at Chidambaram in the morning and Thiruvannamalai in the evening. Day 5 you can think of leaving Thiruvannamalai and heading for Kanhangad. Which ever temple apeals to you, you can stay nearby for longer time and then head to the next destiny. I loved the thiruvannamalai temple (arunachaleshwar).

You can comfortably tour the places with that kind of budget.
Go ahead!
Happy journey!

When in thiruvannamalai did you happen to visit Ramana Maharishi's ashram? I have been told by some that it has been one of the most peacful places they have been.

Yes, it is a peaceful place. There were people meditating around the main building, and there are talks and classes, too, but I came when things were closed, even the bookstore. I was there in March this year.

What upset me, however, was that there was a starving kitten walking around that I gave water to and tried to feed. Ironic, I thought, when the peacocks and monkeys that were there looked well-fed.

The temple that I felt the most connection with was the great temple of Rameswaram, more so than the Shiva temples in Chennai or Tiruvannamallai.

If you are doing a temple tour of tamil nadu, I would defintely include Rameswaram. You could have the buckets of water dumped over you, as I did, to extinguish your past karma.....
