India itinerary advice for 1 month of travel

Hello members of the forum!

I will be arriving in India on the 25th of December. I havent decided on an itinerary yet. I would appreciate any help you could give me. What are the essential places to visit? what city should I start in? Are there any cool places you would recommend?

I will be travelling alone, I have a month to spend in India and I would like to head to China afterwards.

Also, can anyone recommend any good websites on India.

Thanks!

Thumbs up indian experience

Hi Jon,

Assuming that you might be landing at Delhi, you can move to cool places like Shimla-Manali-Dharamshala-Dalhousie (cool himalayas) route, then come to Agra via delhi again, visit Taj Mahal & Fatehpur Sikhri, and go to Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaishalmir, Ajmer) - desert region, then move to Varanasi and then to Kolkata, from here, you can go to Darjeeling-Sikkim region (cool himalayas), come down and visit the Doors-Asssam, and go back again to Delhi to be back to China.

happy journey

If you fly into Delhi, obviously you must see the Taj Mahal, also Varanasi is a must. From there depends, north to the mountains(highly recommended) where its soo peaceful or south to places like Rajasthan where theres magical forts and towns.
If you fly into Mumbai, Goa, then maybe Hampi, Mysore, Ooty, Madurai, Kerala. etc.

There is any easy answer to this, in India or in any country. Open your guidebook, and note which cities have maps for them. The ones that do are the main places to visit.

PS 25th December? - I hope Father Christmas can keep up with you!! And please tell us what an airline christmas dinner was like - I shudder to think of it.

what is your budget and how do you want to travel? i've been in india for a month now and would suggest if you have the money to hire a private driver with a jeep (i know a great one who speaks english perfectly - just ask.)

otherwise, give us more info to help out.

well, im planning the same route since 27th jan 2007.i´m gonna start from delhi and also for one month.on my humble oppinion himalayas is too much, coz in this period supposed to be pretty cold, haan? i wanna do rajastan for sure, then agra, varanasi and kolkata.finally i wanna chill out on the puri beach.
(btw, how about swimming there?is it possible wearing the bikinis like in goa or too many attention?)
from puri ´d like to take domestic flight back to dehli and then directly back to homeland.

As with many beaches in India, much of Puri beach is used as a public toilet. If you want to go bathing, make sure you find the right part! It would not be a good idea to wear a bikini there - this is not a Western resort like Goa or Kovalam. You should wear a tee-shirt, and keep your legs covered.

Thanks for all the replies!

Bahswaran, your suggested itinerary looks very good, im thinking of adopting it and including a few extra diversions (theres a couple of world heritage sites i want to check out)

Does anyone know of a good india map online, one thats preety well detailed or containing markers on the major sights?

Cheers!
