India in June
Our situation is this:
We have June We really really want to go to India When we mention the words 'India' and 'June' in the same sentence to people we get pretty much the same reaction from everyone: A sharp intake of breath, shaking of the head and "ooh, I wouldn't if I was you" combined with warnings in doom-laden voices of intense heat, incredible humidity and torrential rain. Is it really that bad? Is there anywhere we can go? Please help, we know nothing! |

Welcome Kati and ami.
Ofcourse you can go to India in June. Depending on which part of India you plan to visit, you may or may not be affected by the monsoon or hot summer. |

India in June is not that bad depending on the places that you will be going. You can definitely get away from the heat and rains if you wanted to. Here's a link that may help you. I listed the cities I visited and their and what their weather was like in June.

It's hot at other times in India, too. April and May, for example. Just go.

India is wonderful any time of year . Ignore the doomongers and follow your own inclinations. Whatever the weather, you won't regret it.

In june the people from plains tend to go up the hills....nainital, massourie, shimla or other popular destinations will be flodded with people..so you may have to look for the destinations which are less travelled...if u really wanna enjoy nature and unwind..heat will not be a big problem as one travel in AC coaches..

If you really want to go, you will go, and you wont regret it.
You will probably land in Delhi, by the end of the first day you will know what people were warning you about and wonder why you never listened to them. You will need/want to get to the hills, and as others have said, that’s what all the locals will be doing, so it may not be as easy as it is at other times of the year. You do not mention any experience of travelling in Asia or of very hot weather. Combining the heat of Delhi with the culture shock that lots of first-timers experience, you're in for a rough landing, don't be surprised if you just want to get out of India on the next flight. I'm absolutely not trying to put you off, but you need to know that it will not be easy, I speak as a Londoner, and the first rule for a Londoner is to get into India mode, that is to stop rushing everywhere (as in London) and slow down, a one mile walk in the heat of Delhi should take over an hour, stopping for chai (tea) and cold fruit juices, but more importantly, just walking very slowly, just thinking as fast as you do in London will get your clothes wet with sweat, you really do have to slow down your entire body. You shouldn't plan to visit Varanasi or Rajasthan, a quick trip to Agra may be manageable, but it's likely you will not manage the heat as well as you would hope for, and want to get away to the cooler, very scenic hill stations. |

I'm probably still walking at about twice Steven's recommended rate, but, when I find myself rushing past everyone else on the pavement, I only have to look at the sky to remind myself why they are taking it slow! And, anyway, what's the hurry? ![]() |

If its the desert you really really wish to see, then I'll strongly suggest you avoid June and keep it for the winter,if not this year, then maybe next. June is a strict no-no. If its the hills you really really want to see, then June is not bad at all and the rush at hill stations will reduce from second week of June. By all means, go !

Thanks for your help and suggestions, thanks for the link to the other thread about India in June, sorry we didn't see that yesterday. Last night we reached a bit of a crisis point, as perhaps you can tell from the rather desperate tone of our post. We hadn't yet really decided on an itinerary, we were just gearing up to it when one after the other people who seemed to know a lot about India said "don't go" and we thought we'd have to call the whole thing off. Now we're very confused. When we were flicking through the books the idea of the hill stations appealed, particularly areas like Himachal Pradesh, but so did other places like Kerala and Goa. We'd like to experience life in some of the larger towns, but also want to see some amazing scenery, the hill stations appeal for a bit of relaxation in the cool but we also wanted to bum around on the beach for a bit and we also want to see the temples and the wonderful architecture. We're complete novices when it comes to both travel and intense heat. India looks amazing but we don't know if it would be better to put it off for a few years (University intercedes) until we can do it properly. What are areas like Darjeeling like at this time of year? Is there anywhere where there are pleasant beaches in June?

When in June do you plan to arrive? The monsoon sets in during the 1st or 2nd week of June in Goa. So if you arrive end of May of early June, you might get a week of sunshine in Goa, but that's cutting it fine. The east coast does not get much rain, you could go to Madras (Chennai) a big city, and Mahaballipuram (Mahabs) which is a beach resort, and take in a few South Indian temples along the way.

Hello katy and ami:
By all means go anytime of the year. You need to know that those who shoke their heads, if they were Indians, were actually meaning yes! Indians nod their heads indicately a no with the bobble when actually they are saying yes. Just thought some humor with Indian body language was appropriate. There is never a good or bad time to travel. Take in all the places and people will provide. Feeling miserable over heat is part of the Indian charm. Gives an outlet to grumble as a way of dealing with culture shock. Enjoy your travels and wlecome to IM.

can you handle HOT, HUMID weather? what does your head, not your heart tell you? i mean i can handle 40C heat -on the other hand, im miserable if its 12C.
get out early in the cool take a rest in the heat go back out in late afternoon *prepare that teh rain will slow your trip *have a look at the map and go where there is tarmac *stay to cities/villages (no trekking sorts of activities) |

Ladakh in the north is fantastic in June - fly there from Delhi (or Srinagar).
We are in Kerala in the south where officially, the monsoon hits India beginning of June - however, the rains may arrive earlier or later. Again, it is an unforgettable experience (it doesn't rain all the time). It is not a time to loll around on the beach though - and certainly not a good idea to swim in the sea (too rough). Enjoy your time in India. ![]() |
