India in June July budget and itinerary advice please?

Myself and a friend are going to india for the first time from the 24th june to the 22nd of July we fly into delhi and out of mumbai.
We had originally planned to go to;
Delhi (1night)
Agra (2nights)
Rajasthan (5nights)
Varanssi (2nights)
then travel down towards Kerala spend a the remainder of the trip between there and Goa but have now found out it is monsoon season so these two places are not ideal as the weather is terrible and most of the places are closed down as it is off season as we cant change our trip times (part of a round the world trip) does anyone have any ideas of where we can go instead to enjoy sun and beaches in india at that time also any advice on budget would be greatly appreciated i was told around 100 - 150 british£ would be more than enough

Tamil Nadu is normaly dry at this time of the year and has some nice beaches

thanks i will look into it does anyone else have suggestions also bit more info on the budget it is for 2 people sharing accomodation but in seperate beds if that helps give you a better idea

India is cheap, but all that traveling and almost a month's stay might well exceed £ 150 (which is roughly Rs 12,500). You would need to find cheap accommodation like the Paharganj area in New Delhi. Search the forums for places to stay at each of your stops.

I am not sure whether the concept of a Twin room Vs Double Room is really prevalent here...atleast not in terms of the room being cheaper.

I dont think your budget is sufficient for 1 month. Additionally i would always allow for margins on everything and emergency money...

at 150 GBP , or 12,000 INR thats only about 400 INR a day...

sorry i was meaning 100-150£ a week i should of made that clear my fault is that any better? and i wastnt sure about the twiun rooms either but if going in singles istnt that much more expensive we will probably just do that thanks for everybodys fast replies would appreciate any more help people could give with locations to try and budget advice

Figure out the Indian Railway...
Read the stickied posts, this one in particular. The railway is the most cost efficient way of getting around.

However, for the journey from North to South India, you'd best hunt for a low-budget airline. See the India Travel - Getting There and Around section.

The rains hit South India, Kerala in particular with a certain ferocity that one can only experience in India. The monsoons can be frustrating to some, relaxing to others. So before you decide if Kerala is a destination, you need to decide if you can handle the weather. Here's more talk on the monsoons
My advice: stay far from the cities during the rains..all the pollution and dirt can make it a hellish experience.

Up to the hills is where I'll be heading in June. I'm traveling to Munnar for some treks in the rain.

At around Rs. 6-900 per person per day, this sounds a lot more realistic yes.

The thing about single rooms in India is they tend to be just marginally cheaper than a double room, not half the price by far in any case (you'll often just be renting a double room by yourself anyway). So if you can live with one another, sharing a room works out cheaper

It's also fairly common to find them equipped with two separate beds that you can move apart if they already aren't I think. So anyway: traveling in pairs, double rooms are the way to go.

thanks for all the advice everyone im sure i can cop[e sharing a room with my friend yeh my daily budget will be at current exchange rate about 1,500IR and friends is the same so hopefully will be enough.
thank you eggman yeh i have had a look at the railyways they definately seem like the best option i think i will use them to head south aswell as would like to make a couple of stops for example Bandhavgarh (if that is how you spell it). I have had a look at the rainfalls hours of sunshine average and it looks like my best bet is to leave kerala and goa except maybe for a day or two to experince the heavy rain and instead go to the west coast around chenai as the average rainfall is only about 80mm in July in Chenai compared to the 500mm or something like that around goa and kerala

A suggestion is to see Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram), south of Chennai.

The east coast of India (which includes Chennai) receives comparatively less rainfall.

Bandhavgarh is a great option (for tiger-spotting), but if I remember correct it's closed in July...So set your dates correctly.

ah thanks for the heads up i will make sure i check on that yeh i was thinking of just exploring the east coast around thhat area for a week or so do you know if you get beach huts like you do in goa in places there? yeh i definately agree about the rainfall it looked completely different plus there is a lot more sunshine by the looks of the stats and not too many clouds

Keep in mind much of India's coasts are tricky due to strong and treacherous undercurrents. In monsoon conditions, forget about swimming, and know what you're doing the rest of the year. People do drown (outside of the monsoon), so better safe than sorry and all that.

I don't think the east coast has much going by way of Goa-style beach shacks no, maybe here and there. That's what makes it more off-beat

ps Try using a full stop or paragraph break every now and then, will make your posts much easier to read

Ha thanks i will make sure i do that.

I was actually looking forward to the swells im a pretty good surfer and looking at the internet and info on here there is some half decent swells on the east coast at this time.

Thats a shame about the beach shacks they are good cheap accomodation a lot less hassle than having to find a decently priced hotel.

Not at all. I don't think you've been there before? Beach shack doesn't equal cheap or no hassle; staying in a cheap off-beat hotel can and most likely will be the same experience.

Treat the waters there with respect. I know this is impossible to impress on anyone without them having experienced near-drowning first; just don't say no one warned you, and I'd prefer you to come back in one piece.

Let's see, I must have described my experiences on many a thread, but try this one, addressing someone whose close relative wasn't so lucky: Goa drowning: Help to find witnesses!

Keep in mind I'd spent half of my life swimming before that, in rough swells too; this was just different.
