India August-September. Where to go? What to do?!

Hey, im currently in Madurai, Tamil Nadu in south india and have been here for almost a month now. At the moment i am teaching english/geog and a bit of football at a local school as a volunteer but am planning to go travelling properly soon, mainly in the north as i have visited quite a few places in the south on my weekends. I know its monsoon season but what would u guys recommend i do. I particularly want to go to ragistan and see the desert, go to the punjab as thats where my families from, visit delhi for inderpendance day. However what will the weather be like then? What is the most viable things i could do there?
What would be must to do before i leave?- this is my first proper time here. (Sep 26th, the day my uni starts, whoops!)
Is it even worth visiting goa at any point?

i have this same question about goa. is it a tourist party-town nightmare or will it at least quench my ocean-loving soul's needs. more beautiful beaches elsewhere? i will be in the north sept to dec (ever-changing itinerary currently at delhi, dharamsala, rishikesh, agra, varnasi, kolkata) and just began considering taking a flight, if possible, over to goa for the new year celebration before coming back home the first week of january. is this a horrific idea or is goa actually worth seeing?
