Question in the dark about where to go.

My Husband and I are planning a trip to India in December for our friend's wedding. It will begin in Calcutta Dec. 23 and finish in Indore Dec. 28th. We would like to also do some travel of our own afterwards and wondering if we should spend a week or two in Goa, Southern India or both. We would like to purchase an open-jaw ticket but not sure about what airports we should expect good rates from. Any suggested cities or itinerary advice? Even advice on places to look for good plane ticket prices.
Any help would be appreciated because right now I feel like I'm very in the dark about where to go. The beaches of Goa sound appealing, but I'm worried about hotels being booked or trains being filled.
Thanks.

Hello Caryn, Welcome to IndiaMike. Personally would stay away from Goa during the Christmas/ New Year's time period. There are some good planners on IM but you might want to list a few of your preferred interests (cutltural, art, architecture, flora, fauna etc.) for some leads/hints to the experts.

Thank you,
The more I was reading, the more I was worried that it would be a sloppy party. What about in Early January or Mid December (15-24)?
Any other suggestions for relaxing beautiful beaches?

If you are going to be in Kolkatta, then I would suggest going to Orissa to the south and visiting Konarka, Puri and Gopalpur-on-sea. The beaches could nice, not too crowded and enjoyable.

Cheers

Book early as flights are usually full around Xmas/New year. It's the high season which extends into January.

I'd expect the Puri beaches to be very crowded during Xmas-New Year. Puri is THE holiday spot for Kolkatans. Also, every major company in India has a holiday home in Puri. And: Puri is the Venice of India*, where newly-weds "must" go. December is the wedding season in India, so expect the more people going there. But it is still fun seeing all the ocean-shy Indians getting splashed by the waves. They are behaving like children, getting all wet and soaked in their fancy dresses.

* For non-continental-Europeans: Before global travelling became common, going to Venice was the honeymoon trip for everyone North of the Alps.
