I have driven (car) this route many times.

Usually start early morning, about 3/4am, and am in Panjim area by 6pm. Distance is about 750km

Route I prefer to take is Hyderabad-Sholapur-Bijapur-Belgaum-Goa, though if you use the state highways and go via Yadgir, it may be a little shorter.

Reason for the route: Stop at Bijapur for lunch, and whisper at the Gol Gumbaz!! (don't miss it).. also, roads are better as you are longer on the National Highway. Have stayed overnight at Sholapur and Bijapur, too. Interesting, but you want to do it straight.

Road from Bijapur to Belgaum, and the ghat area between Belgaum and Goa, is sometimes iffy.

Soon after entering Goa state, you pass a smallish sanctuary; forget the name.. nice to stop at a small resteraunt there for a coffee break.

14 hrs... on a bike, it should be pretty non stop. Maybe better to take a few hours longer. Sure you don't want to stop overnight?

ps: afterthought... it is better to stop overnight. I drive a car, have company, drive fast... it may get to be a bit of a chore, doing it straight without a break.

Highway 4a is in terrible shape at present. Much of the road from Castlerock to Ponda is so broken up you can drive it only at walking speed and there is a solid stream of mining trucks carrying ore from mines in Karnataka and Goa to a river port. A real shame as this 'highway' goes through a very scenic area and has spectacular views.

Perhaps it would be preferable to take the ghat road from Belgaum to Goa via Amboli and Sawantvadi. I don't have a map with me now and I am not sure how the distances work out, but the Amboli ghat road was a very pleasant drive last year, no traffic and good scenery -- it would be best to drive it in daylight, of course.

What i prefer is Hyderabad->Gulbarga->Bijapur->Belgaum->Goa

Distance will come a little less than 800km.

I don't prefer to do this on a bike in one day. hope you would like to spend an hour in Gulbarga and about 2 hours or more in Bijapur also. So if you plan it for 2 days i feel it will be comfortable. I don't prefer riding in night. why you have to waste the nice places in the dark ha ha..

And make sure your bike is in good condition and if you can(i prefer it) carry a set of cables. hmm.. i won't ask for a puncture kit if you are not a regular rider ha ha.. hope nothing will happen )

when you are planing to ride?

Have a nice ride.

If you want to do it in two days, an interesting option will be to do Hyderabad-Hampi/hospet on day 1 ( Via Kurnool-Gooty-Bellary ) and then proceed to Goa the next day. I guess if you leave at around 5 am from hyderabad you should be in Hampi by 2-3 pm or so. you can have the afternoon free.

From Hampi I guess the route is hampi-hubli-londa-panaji - not sure about the distance, but i guess it should not be more than 7-8 hours on the road. Let me check...

by the way, here is a link on the hyderabad-hampi route I mentioned earlier. It says that the Gooty-hospet stretch is not that good

The Gooty Hospet stretch was so bad about three years ago that I drove back via Bijapur from Hampi.

Truck traffic abounds beyond Gooty.. (steel setup in Bellary I think).. I remember at one small bridge over a river there was no road, just a collection of strategically placed large flat stones on the metal framework.

Ok for trucks, but the maruti 800 I was driving then?

I was told by our driver this past June when we went to Hampi that the Gooty - Hospet stretch was terrible.

About two weeks before i did it in my bike. if you wanted to know the route:

I picked NH-17 from goa. Poladpur i took the left turn to mahabaleshwar then Wai->satara->Solapur->Zalki->Bijapur->Gulbarga->Bidar->Hyderabad.

Road is in good condition for a biker. And i took 3 days for goa-hyderabad.

If you are picking Goa->Londa->Belgaum route, there is no road for 20km near the iron mine areas near Londa-panjim route. If you like to have some nice off-road this will be ok. But it is highly dusty with iron ore(i got fully rusted after that 20km ha ha..).

I have no idea how the road belgaum->baglkot->Bijapur.

Sebin, I assume you did Solapur/Hyderabad via Gulbarga and Bidar because you wanted to.

else, the national highway direct to Hyderbad from Solapur is the shortest and best (condition wise) option.

honestly take the maharashtra roads they are better,,

not trying to be regionalistic, i have travelled by karnataka roads and they are not smooth there are plenty of toll booths but at the end of the day u will get the benefit of a better road

normal route is hyderabad - solapur solapur-sangli-miraj-kolhapur-nipani-sankeshwar-amboli-banda-patradevi,Goa(Mapusa, wherever)

Smile Hyderabad to Goa Roadway

I would say that after Solapur I would take the route towards the North-South Corridor (Highway : Kashmir to Kanyakumari) until Bijapur.
Pretty clean and broad road and decent traffic behaviour. And to add you don't have to go to Kolhapur or Miraj. Guess save few miles.
After Bijapur I would divert towards the Maharashtra State high going to Athani-Kagwad-Chikodi landing on the Golden Quadriangle at Nipani. Only take care to take the left at Kagwad. The right leads to Miraj-Kolhapur.
After coming to Nipani get on the highway and after 10-15 kms get off towards Sankeshwar. Take the right towards Sankeshwar leading to amboli-banda-patradevi,Goa(Mapusa).
Also a good route to not pay any tax as you use the Highway from Nipani to Sankeshwar only for 11-15 Km.s with no Toll Booths.
Have fun

Goa to Gulbarga

Hi,

I would like to drive to Gulbarga from Goa this weekend. Can anyone tell me the best route as I have my kids with me.
It's ok if the route is a little longer as I would prefer a pot-hole free road.

Thanks
