How to Get from Hampi to Bombay
We will be in Goa at the end of Sept, beginning of October. Was thinking about taking a trip to Hampi at the end or our trip. Our International flight leaves from Bombay..
How would we get from Hampi to Bombay?? Thanks.

One of the following, whatever one suites your Itinerary.
Get a bus from Hospet to Raichur (171kms, the bus should pass Hampi and should take 3-4 hours), then....
Train 6012 departs Raichur daily at 22:50 and gets to Mumbai CST at 13:45 (2A, 3A, SL.)
Train 2164 departs Raichur daily at 16:27 and gets to Dadar (Mumbai) at 06:00 (1A, 2A, 3A, SL.)
OR
A bus from Hospet to Bijapur takes 5 hours, Bijapur looks to be an amazing place to visit.
Train 1330 depart Bijapur (M, Tu, W, Th. only) at 15:20 and gets to Mumbai CST at 04:25.
This train has the old First Class (not air con), a wonderful way to travel, most of the space that air con First Class has, but about a third of the price, and no fixed tinted windows., the train also has Sleeper class (not air con).
EDIT NOTE - I think this train no longer has First Class.
OR
You can get a train or bus to Hubli (135kms) then....
Train 1018/1036 departs Hubli daily at 15:15 and gets to Dadar at 05:50 (2A, 3A, SL.)

There is a direct bus from Hospet to Mumbai which takes about 14 hours leaving at around 5pm and reaching the next morning at around 7am. Hope this helps. It is not an airconditioned bus but it is a normal "luxury" bus as they call it in India!!! You can make the bookings in Hampi itself.
Cheers,
Aadil.

You can train Hospet-Mumbai right? Or you think the timing's inconvenient?
http://www.indiagroove.com/ suggests direct trains twice a week (well, both once that is), leaving at 02:30 though, not ideal maybe (on a 20-hour ride though, I wouldn't mind that much). Connecting trains give more options. Long ride, that's the way I remember it too; slow stop-everywhere trains I think. Steve probably found you the more comfy route.
I did Mumbai-Bijapur-Hospet-Hampi I think, but it's quite some time ago and I'm not sure if I bused or trained it from B'pur. I think that same train would have continued to Hospet. To B'pur from Mumbai took forever the way I remember. It's a fascinating town if you can slip it in yes, some excellent Muslim monuments and hardly a Western tourist to be seen (plenty of Indian ones though), from reading here you'd get the impression it's still like that. Maybe Bijapuri can tell us more
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bijapur%2C_Karnataka ,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gol_Gumbaz .
Nearby (to Bijapur) Badami and Aihole (Chalukya monuments and caves, who also influenced Hampi culture I think, and who seem to have predated the Sultanates of Bijapur) are also supposed to be really worth it, haven't been. I think Jorge's been raving about them.
btw If you go, ask for bijApur, not bIjapUr, or no one will know what you're on about
