Probably my only relevant remark ever on Holi (it's just not something that greatly concerns me) here, see what you make of it: A month in India for beginners! .

And I agree, I don't know how acknowledging everyone's posts is in any way helpful, so I'm not sure why you ever brought it up.
As in real life, it's just sometimes nice to say thanks. It doesn't mean you have to do it all the time. More importantly perhaps, there's a form to doing it as well.

Sheesh. You got to China no? You'll have needed some simple human capacities to get there, and to move on, no doubt.

If I'm not mistaken, I thanked everyone in advance in ALL my questions. This saves bandwidth and face. And yes, having lived in China for 4 years and Japan the past 1 year, I've had plenty of experience in multi-cultural etiquette, though I look forward to being schooled in the ways of India (thank you for my first lesson). Anyhow, 'nuff said about that. One love. And thank you for your post above about Holi.

Regards,
Tom Carter

I'm just back from my annual holiday. I go every year in January. This time it was Goa again. Next year it will be re-discovering the golden triangle of Jaipur, Agra and Delhi, with another trip to Bangalore as well.

1) Where would be the ULTIMATE city to photograph Holi? I have heard Mathura. Any other suggestions? Will hotels be especially booked up during this festival?

2) Holi will be my absolute introduction to India (I'll be arriving in India just a couple days before). Dangers and annoyances I should be aware of during Holi?

3) Should I wear a poncho or protective clothing during Holi (for those people who like to target tourists)? Any photographers here have any first-hand stories/advice about shooting during Holi?

Thank you,
Tom Carter
I was in Udaipur for Holi last year. It was beautiful. They even have an "official" function in the courtyard of the city palace where the host is the erstwhile royal family. Tickets are sold for the event.

Each state announces its public holidays in Nov - Dec of the previous year and the local papers carry the list.Say if you want to visit Taminadu Make a search in The Hindu (a daily) for the holidays.I think Times of India also gives a list. But it varies from State to State
