In most of India Easter is just a 3 day weekend. friday, sat, sunday. So people will often go for a small trip in nearby areas.

It is not high season like diwali etc.

It will have higher footfalls , more for the reason of being a long weekend than Easter but nothing like New years time..

Excellent overview for starters there, Puchoo!

btw I think Redmarsy may have meant what about Carnival* in Goa, it is known for it. I have no idea how crowded that gets though; probably not incredibly so I'd guess, but I really don't know. (Moreover, dates for it get asked about every year & typically seem forever hard to find...)

* Or then maybe not, it falls quite a bit before Easter and more typically in Feb./March, no? Hm, never mind.

Wink my experience about Goa

I'd like to go there, when it is a bit less crowded than it normally is. Do you think Goa will be crowded (relatively) during the two first weeks of April 2009?
listen redmarsy. Visitors(foreign tourist) come to goa from jan to March. After that summer are on their height and you would surely feel the heat of it. They enjoy basking in the sun during winters. You will most enjoy in the company of foreign friends. So you must come in feb end. Indians very rarely like to visit. Being poor, they don't stay at three to five star hotels. But exceptions are always there. So don't worry about Indians.

Or one thing you could do come in oct end or nov beginning and stay till christmas. If you want i could send you the list of beaches that you would love to see. Have you seen the movie "Bourne Identity". Beginning portion was shot in Goa.

Hi Arnie

I will most likely be there in the beginning of April, maybe end of March. Things have changed, so I won't be able to come in Feb.

Oct/Nov is no option either, since I will be in India from half Feb to Half July and Goa will be a trip in between, which will only be possible end of March/beginning of April.

Also, I am not worried about Indians, I am worried about massive crowds! I prefer a small crowd, whatever kind of crowd, Indians or foreigners. And I am not a 5star hotel stayer either. I am planning to spend half of my time in Palolem in a beach hut!

But you are saying that April is not a good time? Only because of the heat? Or any more reasons? I hear a lot of different opinions...and I wonder whether it will be hot or simply unbearable to when I am there.

Recently someone also told me that most of the beach shacks will be gone and that it is hard to find fresh fish in April, since there are not a lot of tourists to cater for...Anyone any experience with that?

I am planning to stay in Anjuna first week, Palolem second week. But I'd love to hear about your experience with beaches.

Summers are hot

I was talking about the heat. But one thing that will bless you is that, it is coastal area so in day time you will feel the heat and night you will feel the chill. There is no problem with beach hut. They are good for enjoying shores that is what in "bourne identity". During night you will feel serenity of shore what you wish for. So you must go according to your plan. Go in end march and stay till you enjoy.

Question Questions about HOLI 2009

Hi, I have some questions about Holi 2009 (March 11) that I hope you will indulge me in:

1) Where would be the ULTIMATE city to photograph Holi? I have heard Mathura. Any other suggestions? Will hotels be especially booked up during this festival?

2) Holi will be my absolute introduction to India (I'll be arriving in India just a couple days before). Dangers and annoyances I should be aware of during Holi?

3) Should I wear a poncho or protective clothing during Holi (for those people who like to target tourists)? Any photographers here have any first-hand stories/advice about shooting during Holi?

Thank you,
Tom Carter

Have you tried searching this site on "holi" yet? You will find many previous answers.

(If I sound cranky, I am. You're smart enough to know and find out where to post your questions. Yet you give no input, you only take. You've also hardly acknowledged any previous answers to your queries. You can expect people to get peeved about this.)

(And on that specific subject, try perhaps also this site's excellent article A Beginner's Guide to IndiaMike.com.)

Anyway besides me being a cranky old git, there should be many answers for you on this site already. Really. Just search around for them.

Machadina, is your comment above directed at me personally? Are you kidding? How do you justify any of those accusations? First of all I DID of course search Holi before posting my question (ask the admin!); there are no previous threads that answer my specific queries; search yourself and you will see. Second of all, I don't know what input you expect me to offer here yet? I'm not in India yet and never have been; I am preparing my trip and asking questions as I go along. What exactly do you want me to input, the weather in Tokyo? Ok, today was clear and cool. As for acknowledging answers, I believe I have when it's been warranted, and not when it isn't. Go back and read the answers to my questions; not exactly worthy of an acknowledgement. By the way, I didn't know the goal here was to use up bandwidth and nobody informed me of the Leave a Pointless Comment Competition. Now I know. Anyhow, Machadina, you are a long-standing member here so I'm not going to engage you in a debate. Moving on, if anyone else can help with the above questions, I would appreciate it, I promise to "thank you" after, and next year after I have been in India I promise to "input" my own advice, because heaven forbid I "peeve" anyone.

I see you've now added "thank you" to any of your previous threads.

Hm, I'm not sure if that was called for, or is very helpful. Whatever.

(It's funny, I was discussing with my Mrs. how she might use this site as a resource if she's worried about me. She aptly remarked that if she were to ask "So will this terrorist attack affect him" and she were to be answered "You stupid ^%&* don't you %^& realize he's nowhere $#% near there" she would at least know I should be alright.)

There's an art form to giving an answer as well as taking one I guess.

More importantly perhaps, this entire discussion is really detracting from the main purpose of this thread. Namely of pinpointing Indian holiday dates in 2009, and perhaps and hopefully of use for future years.

chinaphotographer,

This thread:

A Word of Caution about Festivals (Holi)

Now I shall duck from the onslaught of coloured powders; Holi has started early this year!

Your guilt-trip inspired me
And I agree, I don't know how acknowledging everyone's posts is in any way helpful, so I'm not sure why you ever brought it up.
