Hi guys!

Me and a buddy are going to India in August/September and we were wondering if any kind souls would help us out with our itinerary.

Basically our plans are:

Dehli -> Dehradun
Dehradun -> Amritsar
Amritsar -> Dharamsala (via Pathankot)
Dharamsala -> Manali (via Pathankot)
Manali -> Leh
Leh -> Dehli (Flight)

Does this sound like a good strategy to you guys? We're only going for 3 weeks so it will be quite hectic, but also quite an adventure we're hoping! Most connections are either bus or train (was hoping to take the toy train into Dharamsala) except for the flight back to Dehli from Leh. We intend to give 2-3 days grace in Dehli to get our flight in case anything goes south in terms of weather for the Dehli/Leh leg.

We haven't yet booked the flight from Leh -> Dehli, can we do this when we arrive at Dehli airport at the start of the holiday do you reckon?

Also does anyone know if permits are required for any part of this journey (esp Manali -> Leh)?

Finally should we mention Leh when we go get our visa's or will this complicate the issue?

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

If you are particularly wanting to visit Amritsar for Golden Temple then your route is good & recommended. However if you are not over bothered then I'd suggest going to D'sala via Shimla-Mandi, because the toy train journey is far better than the PKT-Kangra. There is a 15 day festival usually held in Leh from 1st Sept. I would book the flight out of Leh asap, it's the end of season & everyone wants to leave at once, so they get booked up this time of year.You don't need any permit unless you want to visit restricted areas. You should mention it on your visa, it shouldn't cause any prob's. It's the back end of the monsoon in India in Aug & places like D'sala are damp & miserable if still raining, so consider doing it the other way round, fly to Leh 1st then by road to Manali, it doesn't rain in Ladakh in Aug, so by the time you reach D'sala in Sept rains should be over.KK

Thanks kullukid

On booking the flights, my LP book says that the flights to and from Leh should be around 80-100USD... yet when trying to book online I get prices of 200USD (which strangely change if I put down I live in India...) Any advice on a good agency to book with?

Same as anywhere flight prices will vary subject to demand. It's standard practise to charge westerners higher prices. Have you tried booking through www.yatra.com I've found them to be reliable. You can actually book the Leh flight through the agent you booked your flight to India with,why not try them for a quote.KK

Thanks man, based on your advise we've roughly sketched out the following:

Dehli - Arrive 21st of August, one night stay

Dehli -> Dehradun (Night Train ?) Travel Cost: 0 days.

Dehradun - If night train above, arrive 8am 23rd leave on the 24th (late if pos)

Dehradun -> Dharamsala (Not sure on this leg yet - via either Shimla or Pathankot, night travel (if pos) would prevent travel time biting to deep in to fun time, toy train through to Dharmsala sounds like a good experience) Travel cost: 1 day

Dharamsala -> Arrive around the 25th (early - to mid day if pos, indiamike tip that lots of hotels don't have 24 hour receptions) leave early in the morning of the 29th (3 day stop)

Dharamsala -> Manali (Local Bus, Day time for valley scenery (Indiamike tip) Travel cost: 1 day

Manali -> Arrive on the 29th (late). Leave on the 31st (1 day stop).

Manali -> Leh (Jeep or Bus with overnight stop along the way to help curb AMS) Travel cost: 1-2 days

Leh -> Arrive around to the 1st - 2nd (7-8 day stop)

Leh -> Dehli (Flight, 9th of September - 2-3 day redundency to get back to Dehli by road if needed for homeward flight 2am on the 12th of September) Travel Cost: 2 hours or so

Cool stuff We're thinking of going via Shimla or Pathankot but have several friends suggesting various alternatives at the moment.

We might just have to decide when we get there!

I think we won't be going to Leh following the horrific events there! We really don't want to take up any food, shelter or transport that could be better used by people currently in harms way.

Does anyone have any advice on alternatives? We were thinking on instead going from Dharamsala to Chamba and exploring the mountains in more depth, but I understand the weather is still pretty terrible there...

Perhaps we should change our itinerary and go to Rajistan instead? So confused at the moment :S

Depends when in Aug you are going?? Usually by last week in Aug rains have started to head back south, so you could find D'sala, Chamba would actually be drier than further south.If you are still visiting your friend in DD you could go Haridwar/Rishi/DD-Shimla-Rewalsar Lake&Mandi-D'sala-Dalhousie-Chamba-Amritsar (Golden Temple)-Delhi or vice versa.KK

Thank you so much for all of your help, certainly feeling very lost at the moment!

I haven't really looked at Rishi and around, how long would you recomend spending in each of these places?

Hmmm what about Nanda Devi and the Valley of Flowers? Perhaps instead of going to Rishi and shimla we could head north from Dehradun for a few days?
