Can someone please suggest what would be the better place to stay between the below mentioned places so that I can enjoy nature at its best and scenic beauty.

1. Between Shimla and Narkanda.
2. Between Sangla, Rakcham and Chitkiul. (will stay in any on of the places and will visit the other two places from there. Is it possible?)
3. We are staying 2 nights at chitkiul, is it possible to visit Nako from there and come back to kalpa again?
The plan will look like this then.

12/9 Reaching Shimla then move to Narkanda and overnight stay.
13/9 Narkanda to Sngla/Rakcham/chitkul?? And overnight stay.
14/9 visit these places and move to Kalpa and overnight stay there.
15/9 rest at Kalpa (Nako??).
16/9 Kalpa to Sarahan and overnight stay.
17/9 visit Sarahan and move to Shimla and overnight stay.
18/9 Move to kalka or Delhi (Depends on the availability).

Please advice. I am free to any suggestions if you know any other offbeat places in this region to stay where scenic beauty is awesome.

Another important thing : I am going in the month of September. Is it require to book the hotels in advance or I can go and book their only?

Thanks In advance,
Tanay Saha

Few general suggestions...HPTDC accommodations are always the best option to stay, though a bit costly. I'll vote for Rackcham as the better staying option since its the remotest in compare to Sangla and Chitkul. In Kalpa, go for the private staying options other than HPTDC Hotel Kinnaur Kailash since their service is very poor. Hotel Kinnaur Villa might be a preferred option. Nako only have a lake and monestory. the lake is more like a pond, nothing great. If you wish to do a day trip from Kalpa to Nako and back, you have travel 240 KMs in which atleast 50 Kms is treacherous.

How many days do you have in your disposal ? My suggestion is to enter through Shimla and exit through Manali via Nako-Tabo-Kaza. Look, if this suitable to you

Day1 Shimla
Day2 Narkanda
Day3 Sarahan
Day4 Rackcham
Day5 Chitkul
Day6 Kalpa
Day7 Tabo
Day8 Kaza/Tabo
Day9 Kaza
Day10 Manali

Thanks Ghosal,

My itinerary is like below as of now.

13-09>> Reaching Shimla via Shibalik from Kalka. I am thinking of moving to Narkanda directly after reaching Shimla and overnight stay at Narkanda.
14-09>> Narkanda to Rakcham via Sangla and overnight stay at Rakcham.
15-09>> Rakcham to Chitkul visit (Confused whether to stay 1 night at Chitkul or shall i move to Kalpa) and overnight stay.
16-09>> Rest at Kalpa.
17-09>> Kalpa to Sarahan and overnight stay.
18-09>> Sarahan to Shimla and overnight stay.
19-09>> Shimla visit and move to Kalka at night and catch Kalka mail.

Please tell me if this is fine.

Please also provide me some contact numbers of hotels of these places and contact numbers for cab drivers/Tour agents if possible.

Do I need to book the hotels in advance or can book over there only ? Is September a very rush time there?

What can be the possible expenses for cab and hotels per day.

Thanks & regards,

Tanay Saha

Stay at Kalpa

Hi Tanay,

I can speak only for Kalpa - private hotels are better. Stayed at Blue Lotus for 2 nights last October. It was pretty much the end of the season so we were able to get a good rate - 600 bucks. The food was awful - but thats not why you're going there.

The hotel is pretty much on the main market/square. Great terrace (common) on the both floors that offers spectacular views of the sunrise from behind the mountains.

I would definitely carve out a night in Kalpa - for the view of the milky way - something i had never experienced in my life before that trip - it really puts our tiny existence in the world into perspective.

Kinnaur-taxi

May-2015, I hired a cab from Mr. Dilip (Scorpio) at 4 k per day for a spiti trip as it was just a 3 days trip and I did not have time. Peo Taxi Union quoted rate around 3500+driver's bording-lodging.

Mr. Dilip- 09459563473

I am sure rates can be negotiated for longer trips.

Mr. Dilip got some urgent work and send another driver Mr. Lalit sinh with his Scorpio.

Mr. Lalit sinh is a very good driver. He himself has a Tavera and I would recommend him for his services.

Mr. Lalit sinh: 08894008553

Both drivers are from Kalpa and provide good service.

Bargain and you should get a rate around 3200-3300.

You can contact vinkle (search number in indiamike)..He is also highly recommended driver

Thanks Nikhlus, For the wonderful description. I also heard that September is not a season out there, I also planning to book hotel on reaching there.
What I am concerned about, is this the same for other locations as well. I don't have any Idea about hotels in other places. What information I am getting in internet for the hotels in other places, seems they are very expensive.
I found some beautiful camps in Rakcham as well. Do you have any contact numbers and names for hotels in other places as well?

Thanks & regards,

I don't think there will be too much rush in September. Two nights at Kalpa is really not required. Instead, you may utilize those in Rackcham/Chitkul. Incase, if you are planning to stay at Rackcham, its better to pre-book the accommodation in Hotel Rupin River View(rent will be Rs.1500-Rs.2000) since that is the only option there. There are other tented accommodations but those are costly. In Chitkul, you will be able to find budget hotels but personally I liked Rackcham since the place is peaceful in compare to Chitkul. You will get budget accommodations in Kalpa, Sarahan, Shimla and Narkanda. But best options are HPTDC arrangements apart from Shimla and Kalpa. For Kalpa, I've already mentioned my choice. In Shimla, I would suggest you to stay near the lift where it will be cheaper in compare to those near mall. The accommodations near mall are overpriced and not value for money. Even you need to hire a coolie to take your luggage up there and then down. But if you stay near the lift, pay only Rs.20/head and you are there in the mall/ridge.

Hi All,

Can someone please suggest some good budget hotel names and numbers in the below mentioned places.

1. Narkanda
2. Sangla
3. Chitkul
4. Kalpa
5. Sarahan

Is it worth staying a night in Sangla? I only have 2 nights to stay in Sangla valley. As I found that Sangla, Rakcham and Chitkul are nearby, I was wondering where to halt among these three places.

3. Chitkul- hotel shahensha (better to avoid both shahensha n panchali, very high cost of stay and foods, sply chicken items). I heard thakur dhaba is better. Dump the place if they quote exorbitant prices, not a great place to stay anyway due to high wind. I understand the place is remote and difficult for logistics, but pricing policy shall be transparent atleast.
4. Kalpa- I stayed in HPTDC. I kept some budget to stay there, liked the place and view.
5. Sarahan- I stayed in the temple guesthouse. Didn't like outside accommodations. However, it's a personal choice.

I didn't do any pre-booking for sept last week-oct first week, 2015. But during puja vacations everything will be full with noisy bong families asking mach bhat dal alubhaja in spiti!!
Carry a couple of bed sheets if you do not get any high end stays.

Can anyone has any personal experience with these drivers.

Is it safe to transfer advance money if they ask ?

If anyone has good experience with any drivers , please share the number and name.

Thanks & regards,

I had good experience with Mr. Dilip (09459563473), for my Manali-kinnaur-Spiti-Manali trip, 26sept-2nd Oct, 2015. Very good person, knows the route and locals pretty well. He stopped for all my photography spots and toilet breaks. Suggested good accommodation and fooding options, and all were good ( i didn't have any pre-booking). Every morning he presented a clean scorpio vehicle, with cushions and carpets all in place and clean. However, I preferred accommodations and foods with local touch to have a feel of local life and cuisines. These may not be preferred by normal tourists. I survived on Thukpa, Thenthuk, Butter tea etc.
While coming down to Manali, I received an SOS from home for medical emergency. Mr. Dilip ensured I get the Delhi bus. He also helped me to get the tickets etc.
He charged a little high, perhaps due to unplanned and hectic schedule of covering entire circuit in just 6 days.

For Raksham try Rupin River View. I recently did Kinnaur & Spiti Trip and while in Raksham I stayed at Rupin River View. Amazing views, awesome food (the cook earlier worked at a 5* Hotel in Goa) decent rooms and just on the banks of the Baspa river. In Chitkul you can prefer for right on the river bank Chitkul Banjara Camps. Kalpa try for Rolling Rang...it's proprietor is the same as Rupin River View one and it's good.
