Smile Hey! Would really love some help with my itinerary to North India in July :)

Hi everyone!

I have been looking at India Mike for the last few weeks trying to find out the best places to go in July to India. I would now like some advice to finalise my itinery as I'm finding it all a bit stressful and confusing! I have tried to get hold of a India lovely planet to help me out but I'm currently in Laos and can't get hold of one.

We only have from July 15th to 30th so where I would normally just go with the flow I want to make sure I have everything planned and booked before I go as I don't want to waste any time!

So this is what I have in mind -

Mumbai (1 night) -
Jaipur (2 nights)-
and then up North from what I have read on these forums Rishikesh and Leh Ladakh seem the best places to go around this time of year, would I have time for both or would it be better to concentrate on Leh?

If best to concentrate on Leh what would be the best way to get there from Jaipur and also get back to Dehli? Would it be best to fly into Leh or is it best to do it over road to acclimatize? I'm just worried about losing time travelling so thinking fly may be best but then we would miss out on the scenery?

I would like to have around 4 days back in Dehli area to have a look around Dehli and also vist Taj Mahal and also the fort.

Would really appreciate help and advice.

I was also wondering if it would be worth paying extra to do it through a tour agency so we have a guide?

Many thanks in advance for your help x

Welcome to IM

Little Hayley, if it were my two weeks, I'd make a fast forward to Delhi and head for the hills. Since you're already in Laos, you know hot, so take a break and see some Himalayan hills! I'd skip Mumbai and Jaipur for another trip. Truly great places, but a bit spread out for your two weeks, IMHO.

Someone better acquainted with the trains should advise you about combining Delhi, Rishikesh and Leh...flying Delhi/Leh will naturally give you more on the ground time, and train back to Delhi will be an interesting one way trip.

Thank you for your reply!

It's Monsoon season here at the moment in Laos, and it's not actually that warm but we have experienced very hot teperatures in Argentina, Australia and Thailand!

Our flights are into Mumbai and I can't change them, we stop one night and then fly to Jaipur, we fly out of Dehli back to London, all of these flights are already booked and I can't change them.

If any body could advise on the best way to travel from Jaipur up to Leh I would really appreciate it, would it be best to get a train to Dehli and then a flight to Leh?

Really wish we had the lonely planet, it's so difficult to arrange things from here!

Many thanks.

Jaipur to leh - quickest would be a bus to delhi and a flight next morning to leh.

Okay thank you, I was looking into a train from Jaipur to Agra as everyone has said it would be best to experience train travel whilst in India!

I have now revised our plan.

15th - Arrive in Mumbai
16th - 5-6 hours sightseeing in Mumbai, evening flight to Jaipur
17th - Full day of sight seeing in Jaipur, stop night in Jaipur
18th - Early morning train to Agra, morning visit fort, later visit Taj Mahal and watch sunset and look at Taj Mahal by moon light, stay night in Agra
19th - Train back to Delhi
20th - Full day of sightseeing in Delhi
21st - Fly to Leh
22nd
23rd
24th
25th
26th
27th
28th
29th
30th Fly from Leh to Delhi early morning, late in evening fly back to London

I have not finalised plans for Leh, just doing some research now.

Do you think our itinery looks do able or ridiculously exhausting? We have being travelling for the last 9 months so we are used to travelling a lot and packing a lot of stuff in!

Thanks for your advice
