Help with complicated itinerary!
Hi guys! This is my first time to India, I land in Delhi and then have two months until I depart from Mumbai. The first part of my trip I am having the most trouble with... When I arrive in Delhi, I want to see the following places in the northwest region: Agra and Jaipur and Rishikesh. I just dont know which order is the best if I am heading east over to Kolkata afterwards. Should I do Rishikesh first then back down to Agra and Jaipur or the reverse, keeping in mind I need the easiest way to get east afterwards. My plan after moving east is to hit Khajuraho, Varanasi (if it is a must?) KOlkata and Darjeeling. Again, would it be best to go up to Darjeeling and then down to Kolkata, or the reverse? I will be heading south after that.. Thanks so much in advance for any help you can give me!

Sounds like a great trip ...
Just a personal view - but I reckon the cities like Calcutta and Jaipur need time to appreciate their atmosphere and culture, whereas the tourist spots like Agra can be a quick spin around the Taj and get out. And how are you planning to travel? Trains are a good way to see the country and the people - and there's some excellent train experts on IM. And beware of Mumbai ..... apparently it smells ![]() |

Hi somekid,
Rishikesh/Haridwar first (if you're going to Rishikesh do stop in Haridwar too!), back to Delhi, then Jaipur, then Agra. From Agra you can get to Varanasi by train easily and then on to Kolkata. I'd say Varanasi is a must, but you don't ask about Khajuraho which IMHO really isn't a must and is a detour off the railway line. If you're doing Khajuraho though, you really should consider Orchha as well- it's a lovely place. Get off the train at Jhansi for Orchha and taxi/bus from there. From Orchha you can get jeeps and buses and whatnot to Khajuraho, and in Khajuraho a bewildering number of people will be just dying to help you with your onward travel arrangements. |

Thanks for the replies. I am planning on using predominantly trains for my journey. One change- When I said Khajuraho, I was thinking Bandhavgarh National park. I will not be going to Khajuraho but I definitely want to visit the wildlife park.
