help - trying to find a train frm Panaji to Kozhikode Hi, Can anyone help??! Can't seem to find info on train times, or even a train, which goes from Panaji to Kozhikode(Calicut). Am hoping to catch an early train which will allow time for a bus ride/taxi over to Mettupalayum to catch up with the 7.20am Blue Mtn railway upto Ooty. Any advice would be Hugely appreciated. Thank you. PS Also - what are people's feelings about going to Mysore? Is it worth going with a time constraint of just one day?

Perhaps you would be better served if you tell us what you wish to see in India - what your interests are. Also, you should let us know when you are travelling as this can make a big difference in suggestions. I see you are going to be there for three months so you should get to see quite a lot. It does not make much sense to pass through Kerala and not visit it. There is no railway station in Panaji. The nearest is Madgaon

Thanks for your advice. I'm frantically trying to figure out the best options for getting to places quickly as my boyfriend is coming too but only for 2 weeks! Does anyone know if it's possible to get from Madgaon to Mettupalayum, or somewhere else on the Blue Railway, in 24hrs????? I seem to be spending days looking at schedules but just getting more and more confused? Cheers all, Lisa.

If you absolutely must go from Goa to Mettupalaiyam in 24 hours then You can fly from Panaji to Coimbatore with a connection in Bengaluru (Arr Coimbatore 18:30). From Coimbatore you can get to Metupalaiyam. You will have to stay overnight in Coimbatore or Mettupalaiyam. The journey is probably infeasible by train. None of the overnight trains from Goa will get you to Calicut in time to catch a bus or taxi to Mettypaliyam in time for the connecting train to ooty. Personally I would not do such a journey - too expensive and too much of a rush

help with blue railway (please!!) Thanks for all your advice. I now seem to have formulated a better route - my plan is to now go from Mysore to Ooty via bus and then the blue railway down to Mettupalayum or Coimbatore. However, how much daylight is there in January (1st week) in that area as I understand the train back down to Mettupalayum is around 3.30pm? Obviously if it's dark by 5pm there's not much point!! Or perhaps someone knows if there's an early morning 'blue' train down?????? Big, big thanks again to all those who take the time to reply - it's immensely appreciated and is diminishing these frazzled 'organising' nerves. Cheers, Lisa.

I have enclosed a link to sunrise and sunset times in Chennai which is about the same latitude as Ooty. Basically sunset is 18:10 pm - 18:15 pm depending on the date. Visibility may also be affected by fog (mist). How are you getting from Goa to Mysore? http://www.timeanddate.com/worldcloc...&afl=-11&day=1

Pontesnm, Thank you again for such helpful advice. The sunrise/sunset chart is a great resource as it could affect quite a few of our travel plans - cheers for that! We're not sure if we'll go to Goa, maybe straight to Mysore, as it sounds like a long, long trip otherwise... By the way sorry if my posts keep going directly to you - I'm not familiar with this site and only seem to be able to 'reply' to previous comments as opposed to being able to post a general post! (Maybe I'm just having a blonde moment or ten.) Regards, Lisa.

Well I replied because you did a double post and no one replied -- lisajdakin help with blue railway (please!!) -------- Where are you beginning your journey from? Are you flying into Bangalore from the UK. Someimes you can get an "open jaw" ticket flying say London-Bengaluru (Bangalore) and then Kolkata - London for the same price as London - Bangalore round trip. Many years age we rented a car and driver for three weeks and did Bangalore - Mysore - OOty - Kodai - Bangalore.

Thanks Pontesnm, It's probably easier if I tell you our proposed itinerary! We're flying into Delhi on 28 Dec am (from the UK). Spending afternoon 28th in Delhi and overnight and then next morning taking the train up to Shimla - 29th & 30th overnight in Shimla. 31st Dec back down to Delhi (early) to catch 3.30pm bus to Agra. 31st Dec stay near Taj Mahal. 1st Jan sunrise at taj mahal, then around lunchtime catch bus to Jaipur. Stay Jaipur Ist Jan. Leave Jaipur early evening to catch bus to Pushkar. 2nd Jan overnight in Pushkar. 3rd Jan pm take overnight train or bus to Udaipur. 4th Jan in Udaipur and overnight. 5th or 6th Jan take plane Udaipur to Bombay. Take 11pm sleeper train to Goa. 7th Jan arrive in Panaji - spend day and night in Panaji. It's from here on we're not quite sure due to logistics of getting around quick enough via bus/train! So, 8th Jan somehow get to Mysore from Goa - this could be a train down the coast to Mangalore and then over or another route - whichever is quickest! Arrive Mysore 9th Jan - spend night there. 10th Jan look around Mysore and then take a bus/train to Ooty - we really want to go on the blue railway from Ooty down to Mettupalayam or Coimbatore (and will not compromise on this!) but due to daylight hours we're not sure if this is feasible. Do you know if there is an early train down from Ooty or is the 3.30pm the only one??? In which case we would need to get from Mysore to Mettupalayam in one day, sleep there and then take the 7.20am upto Ooty the next day. Hmmmmmm ..... 12th Jan make our way to Kozhikode and take a train down to Kochi. Spend night of 12th Jan in Kochi. 13th board a house boat and relax for two nights. 15th Jan find a way to the Perivar Wildlife sanctuary. Stay at the sanctuary for the night. 16th take a taxi or bus from town nearest sanctuary to Kollam - stay overnight. 17th early am take train to Trivandrum - stay in Trivandrum 17th. Late afternoon on 18th train back to Kochi - stay in Kochi 18th. Morning of 19th look around Kochi, then over to Kochi airport to bid a sad farewell to my boyfriend who has to come back to the UK for work. Then my adventure alone begins...... for 2 months.... yipeeeee

Have you booked that flight yet? If not, you can do that journey by train at a fraction of the cost (not that cost is the issue - I'm an unashamed fan of rail travel!). Train 9943 (UDZ ADI Express) departs Udaipur 19:45, arrives Ahmedabad Junction 04:20. Train 2934 (Karnavati Express) departs Ahmedabad Junction at 04:55, arrives Mumbai 12:35. To allow a bit more time to connect at Ahmedabad, there's also train 2990 which departs at 05:05 and arrives Mumbai 13:05. I'm also surprised that you're doing the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur legs by bus, when the trains are so good on those routes...
