Lightbulb Help to plan Gangotri Badrinath trip.

Good day to you and greetings from me and my family!

We,2 couples in our 50s, are planning a trip to Gangotri and Badrinath in Oct 13th to 22nd.

We have pianned it as under-

13th Oct- Reach delhi By 11am and proceed by a hired car ( a Tawera) straight from the airport to Rishikesh for night halt.

14th Oct- Reach Uttarkashi for night halt.

15th Oct- Reach Gangotri and come back to Harsil for Night halt.

16th Oct- Harsil to Rudraprayag for night halt

17th Oct- Rudraprayag to Badrinath (night halt)

18th Oct- Badrinath- Auli- Pipalkotifor night halt

19th Oct- Pipalkoti to Dhanolti

20th & 21st Oct- Stay at Dhanolti and visit Mussoorie, Tigerfalls etc.

22nd Oct. Dhanolti to Delhi.

I need help from you for my following Queries-

1. Starting from delhi in the Morning, ( i cannot reach before 10 am), can i reach Harsil on 2nd day evening?

2. Which are the must see places on the rout I will be taking?

3. How can I book a taxi? Ihave checked on the net and got few addresses of Haridwar. Do you know any reliable Agency?

4. Is it safer to book a taxi through GMVN? People say that they arrange for alternatives in case of land slides. But they are atleast 50% costlier!

5. How would be the season in Oct? what is the probablity of getting stuck due to landslide?

Waiting for your suggestions!

Explore Barsu/Mukhba when your are in Harsil enroute to Gangotri...
I will advise you to keep this book from Outlook on Uttarakhand handy with yourself. It has all the place Dhanaulti,Gangotri,Badrinath ete etc at one single book
You can buy online too just 230 bucks good value for money...

Tiger Falls is not in Mussorie but around Chakrata..Chakrata is a nice calm place to be..I will surely recommend visiting it ..its hardly 70 odd kms or from Mussorie..

Bardinath:Try to goto Mana village and explore that area..

1.) I don't think you can reach Harsil on second day evening. You reach Delhi 10 AM in the morning. Start directly to Rishikesh. It can take around 8-10 hrs to reach Rishikesh. You start early morning from Rishikesh and reach Uttarkashi by evening. It would take 8-10 hrs to reach Uttarkashi. Also, after sun set they don't allow vehicle movement in the area.It would be very tiring from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi. You might want to stay and take rest. Uttarkashi is also good place to visit in the early morning.

2.) In October, there is less possibilities of land slide. However; even if it happens: nobody can do anything even with the alternate taxi provision. I would advice you to take a good taxi from Delhi itself. In Haridwar/Rishikesh at times they exploit you more seeing tourists with no options.

Thanks for your post
Why bucket seats? Will it make significant difference in comfort in the hills? On the planes it doesnt make a big difference.

Thanks for your info.

I am trying to save a day of travel so I can spend it either at Harsil or at Haridwar/Auli. If it is not possible then I will extend by a Day!

What do you suggest- a stay at Badrinath or Auli? is it worth spending a day at Auli in this season ( Oct 3rd week)or we should rather stay at Badrinath?

I have enquired about taxi with 2 agents. the rates quoted seem reasonable- Indica Rs 1600/day and Tavera Rs 2500/day.

I think a local driver will be better as he would know the routs, road condition etc. Also if something goes wrong then local Agent may be in better position to arrange for help. But if I can get aDriver from delhi who is wellversed with the area then hiring taxi from delhi is also a good Idea.

What is your experiance? generally Delhi Drivers will be knowing the area well?

Prakash - Yeah in hills it makes a difference because roads are zig zag and you keep floating here and there.

In the rates, there has to be a per km rate with minimum number of km per day deal. Typically the rates are 9-10/- per km for Innova (or tavera) with 250 km per day of minimum. For Example: if you are taking car for 3 days you have to give him business of atleast 250*3 = 750KM which I think you will end up in doing.

- Personally, I would spent a night at Badrinath and have some spiritual flavor. Last time, when I went to Badrinath with a tight packed trip, we realized that temples are closed for that particular evening (for some Hindu timings) so we went so far and didn't get to meet the God. It might be a good idea to take some time for Badrinath. Also, it's a pretty good place.

My experience with Delhi drivers is pretty good. A good driver finds out ways everywhere

Thanks Mukuls97! It will definitely be a good idea to hire a taxi from delhi if I get a good driver. it will save empty taxi travel from haridwar.

Can you sugges any reliable Agency to provide Taxi?
