Help on route from Bangalore to Kumbakonam

Hi All,

I am a new member of this group.

I am planning to drive down from Bangalore to Kumbakonam around the end of December. I was trying to identify the most ideal route. The priorities are:

1. Time & Comfort (good roads)
2. Distance

I browsed through some maps and identified 2 possible routes:

Route 1

Bangalore - Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem - Namakkal - Karur - Trichy - Thanjavur - Kumbakonam

Route 2

Bangalore - Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem - Perambalur - Ariyalur - Thanjavur(?) - Kumbakonam

I would like to have advice whether there are routes that I can take. Also details on which would be the fastest route. For information, I drive a Mahindra Scorpio. I am traveling with the family. I am planning to leave early in the morning (around 5.30 AM) from Bangalore. I would also appreciate if I could get advice on the places to stop for Breakfast and Lunch.

The shortest route will be

Bangalore - Krishnagiri - Thiruvannamalai - Villupuram - Neyveli - Kumbakonam.

Upto TV malai is NH and is a pretty good road. After that will be state highways and maynot be as good. Have not been in these roads recently. However, this route will be 80-100 KMs shorter for you.

Kumbakonam my hometown , " the city of temples " wow....

Will go with slakhs on this " Bangalore - Krishnagiri - Thiruvannamalai - Villupuram - Neyveli - Kumbakonam " this will be the closest to reach Kumbakonam ..

If u take the Salem route it might take a few extra hrs as travel from Thanjavur - Kumbakonam via needamangalam might be chaotic ....

Anybody knows how long does it take from Tiruvannamalai to Kumbakonam by taxi ? It exists any direct bus service ?

I am visiting TN from bangalore and am not interested in going to Chennai but would like to go to Mamallapuram and Kanchipuram.
does anybody know if the above mentioned route is doable also by public transport? ie train or buses? and how long does it take?
One you are in Tiruvannamalai, is it possible to reach Kanchipuram and Mamallapuram by public transport too?maybe via villupuram?

if you have time to find out for yourself once you are there, you will certainly find buses to the places you like to go. Tiruvannamalai is a pilgrimage place, so it has buses in all directions. To Mammalapuram you will most likely go thru Tindivanam rather than Villupuram. After Mahabalipuram I would go south on the Beach Road to Pondicherry, stay there for a day, then go further south.
