Help needed planning 6 week trip in India, starting point Delhi!
Hey everyone,
Im arriving in Delhi on 8 July 2008 and have 6 weeks to explore. I have more or less planned my first four days in Delhi, but am needing a little advice of where to go from there. We are then flying out to Sri Lanka from Thiruvananthapuram, Southern India. India being such a vast country, I can not hope to do more than scratch the surface. Although I have previously been to SE Asia, this is my first time in India. Im looking for a varied visit, with some time to chill out on a beach or two - less commercial than Goa though. We will be trying to stick to a low budget, traveling by train if possible. Any advice would be much appriciated Thanks Claire x |

One thing to bear in mind is that July is one of the hottest months in India - and the high humidity and monsoons might be a factor as well. Not familiar with Goa weather at this time of the year, but my guess is hot and wet.
You might want to take some time to head North into the mountains, particularly areas such as Leh/Laddakh - as that is dry as well as cool. That said, my suggestion is not in line with the rough plan and preferences you have outlined. All the same, you might wish to rethink your plans and preferences - or not. |

Thank you! All I really have in mind so far is that I deffinately want to see the Taj Mahal and get a general feel for India. I've been reading through the India Lonely Planet, but I obviously do not have enough time to visit all areas. I'll deffinately read more into Leh/Laddakh tonight!
Thanks again for your reply, all advise is helpful! |

I traveled through Rajasthan last July and while hot, it was bearable except for perhaps a couple of hours at mid-day. I'd suggest you could split the trip, spending 4 weeks in the north, then fly down towards your southern departure point and spend a couple of weeks in Kerala. The monsoons may be in full swing in the south, so that might affect your plans.

Some people prefer to travel during the monsoon. It's quiet and almost eerie.
You'll also get some good deals on hotels at low season and it will be easier to book trains and so on. |

Yea, mostly it will be warm and wet in many places you head to. I would suggest checking out an India Eyewitness Travel Guide (DK Publishing). They are sold at all the same places as the LP guide put they have tons of fabulous pictures and little snippets about the locations. You might find one at the library too. Flipping through it may help you chose a few destinations. Places I would consider: Udaipur (the lake would be full during that time), Darjeeling (hill station, should have pleasant temps at this time of year), Khajuraho and/or Ajanta/Ellora caves (out of the way places that are world heritige places in between point A and B). I will let someone else make suggestions for the south and beaches.
In addition you might check out this guys blog http://www.moxon.net/india/agra.html it has some really good info on many place in India and its an interesting read too:-). |

Hi,
I've only just seen that you posted on here in Feb (still learning how to use it). Not been yet, this time in 5 weeks and we'll be on our way! Im really excited now! Although, from reading other treads, it looks like it's going to be really humid! Oh well hey! Starting in delhi, n see where it takes us! Where's your favourite place? |
