You're too late for the Pushkar Camel Fair for this year, so that will save a few days for you to go elsewhere.

Making Mumbai a base visit Ellora and Ajanta. Move out of Mumbai for Goa.
From Goa take train to Kerala. From Kerala go to Chennai, visit Mahabalipuram, take train to Kolkata. From Kolkata train to Varanasi, then to Agra. From Agra take an overnight train to Amritsar. From Amritsar you can take a bus to Shimla. Himachal Pradesh has very good bus service so from Shimla you can take a bus to Dhramshala. I am not sure about Leh in winter. For Kashmir it is better to fly to Srinagar from Delhi. |

Never mind if you have missed Pushkar fair. Attend Bikaner Camel fair in December end and attend Jaisalmer desert festival at January. Make your trip like this.
Mumbai- Ajanta- Elora-Goa- Kerala- Chennai- Kolkata- Sunderbans- Siliguri- Darjeeling- Sikkim- Varanasi= Allahabad- Rajasthan-Agra- Jammu- Srinagar- Leh- Manali- Shimla- Dalhousie- Amritsar- Delhi. You can follow this route. Consult with local proffesionals rather than the guide books which frequently have wrong informations. Visit Rajasthan during the desert festival at Jaisalmer. You will enjoy. Quote:
