Haridwar to Kedarnath and back

I request experienced members to help me to fix travel itinerary from Haridwar to Kedarnath and back. I want to use State transport or regular transport buses. I also want to understand that if package tour is not taken then what may be the likely trouble in travel. I will reach Haridwar on 09/05/09 at 12:30 PM and want to come back on 13/05/09 , 10 PM max at Haridwar. My traveling will be alone.

Will be hectic in public transport but can be done. From haridwar, go straight to rudrapryag. Stay overnight. 10th , to gaurikund. Stay overnight. 11th , to kedarnath and back to gaurikund . 12th ,be relaxed, go to Ukhimath and visit the temple, stay overnight and 13th , come to haridwar. Remember to take jeeps and avoid busses.

Haridwar-Kedarnath-Haridwar

Dear sir,
Tour to Kedarnath was beyond imagination once. Now it is not like that. Upto Gowrikund you have got lot of ways to reach.
1. By Himachal Pradesh Bus
2. By arranging hired transport (Ambassador, Sumo, Tempo Travellers etc according to the size of the group.
3. By package tours.
4. By own Transport.
The difference in all the above are on the budget.
The first once will be more cheap
The second one is on sharing basis
The third one is costly.
On arrival of Haridwar you can approach the nearest bus stand for state transport bus or individual bus. The cost upto Kedarnath will be mostly around Rs 350.00 now. (Previously it was Rs 250).
You can get ticket to the point you need. Enroute are Dev Prayag, Rudraprayag, Kedarnath, Joshimut, Pipalkot, Badrinath, Mana. The only point is all are scheduled buses so you have to obtain the schedule every time before you leave the bus stand.
Journey Hours: Haridwar to Kedarnath - 12 Hrs.
Kedarnath to Badrinath - 12 hrs
The enroute stay you can calculate.
Accommodation: At all the places very good budget accommodation are available. Confirm tariff before occupation.
all the best for a happy and safety journey

You need to get down at Gourikund and have to do a 14 Km trek to Kedarnath. I went long back at 1993, but all the sites on net says the same even today.

The way bus service to K'nath has been mentioned here, it would be very confusing to many visitors to IM - Mods take note!

I pray that no fertile govt/neta brain comes up with this idea one day (bus service to K'nath) - and if it comes, after I am dead please .

How did you come up with this plan when I had mentioned you have to stay at gaurikund. You cannot do rudrapryag to kedarnath in one day as there is a 14 kms trek. And if you go with local busses, then add 1 hour for every 4 hour of journey that you can do by sumo or Mahindra. As for accommodation, you are single so that will not be a problem, there is always just that extra space if you request.

I think it is a real shame to visit Kedarnath only for a few hours as it is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful settings possible anywhere in the world.

Watch the sunrise or sunset from the spot where Adi Shankracharya took his samadhi facing the extraordinary towering snow clad mountains almost jumping at you and see the changing colors of the snow - yellow ,pink , orange , purple. Walk up to the small grassy Bugyals awash with tiny flowers, in the surrounding mountains , the sheer beauty of which takes your breath away. Walk up to Gandhi sarovar where ashes of Gandhiji are scattered . Sit,watch and hear the gurgling string like Mandakini rush out from the bowels of the mountains . Read about the Mahabharatha / Pandavas mythology and legends relating to Kedarnath and get a sense of cosmic connection, peace and tranquility and feel closer to GOD.

Visiting the temple itself doesn't even scratch the surface of the Kedarnath experience. Same day return trips to Kedarnath is disrespect to the place.

I travelled by GMOU bus. They are pretty okay with a reasonable rate for ticket. There are morning buses from Haridwar that reach Gaurikund in the evening, and same from the opposite direction. This will take two days out of your schedule. Utilize the other days for Kedarnath.

can you give details of conditions inside these buses.i mean if these are comfortable.i can not tolrate smoking by people around.
while on trips to kashmir i have seen drivers being very strict to smokers.neither is there any difficulty in trips between delhi
and chandhigarh.is atmosphere o.k inside bus here too.

Buses are just OK. Not very comfortable.

People may smoke on these buses, as many local residents smoke Beedis, but you may object and most of the people do. Usually the smokers obliges.
