Haridwar to Badrinath

Hello everyone-

I will be driving from Haridwar to Badrinath on the coming Friday (28 Sep 2007). I plan to leave at around 5 in the morning. Had a few questions - would really appreciate if you guys could help me out-

1) If all remains fine - no blockages, land slides etc - how much time would it take to reach Badrinath? I will be taking a Scorpio (in case it depends on the choice of vehicle)?

2) I believe that at Joshimath there is a gate that opens for the onward trafic at fixed times. is that correct? If yes, any idea on what those times are, for the upward journey?

3) Is the time (end of September) ok to be visiting Badrinath? What can be expected in terms of weather?

Hi Jayant,

Jai Badri Vishal.

Scorpio is one of the vehicles meant for power, comfort and safety in hilly areas like joshimath and above. Your choice is best. But i will insist, take the driver with you.

Secondly, route above joshimath is opened thrice in a day, once in morning at 10 o'clock, then at 1.00 pm and lastly at 4.00-5.00 pm. As the above road is narrow, one way traffic is possible at one time. But try to spend some time at joshimath (in that traffic jam), it will be worth.

Lastly, I hope the weather will be fine in end of September.

1. Under normal road condition, it should take about 12 hours from Haridwar to Badrinath including 2 breaks in between of about half-an-hour each.

2. The last gate from Joshimath to Badrinath is at 4.30 p.m. This means that if you start at 5.00 a.m., you may be cutting too fine to get the last gate at Joshimath. The first gate starts at 7.30 a.m. at Joshimath. If my memory is correct, every two hours the gates open at Joshimath.

3. I have visited Badrinath 3 times during the months of Sept-Oct and I got clear weather with pleasant climate during day time. But one can not be sure of weather in mountains. Evenings to early morning will be very cold.

Jayant, why don't you stay at Rishikesh then Haridwar, it will cut almost the time by 3/4 hour. (I hope you will be going from noida to haridwar in day 1)

Thanks gentlemen for the replies. They have been very helpful. I'll then try leaving Haridwar by 4 in the morning.

And the reason why I am stopping at Haridwar, Patiala, instead of the better choice of Rishikesh is that I am constrained into leaving Noida only by afternoon tomorrow (27th Sep). Which means, I will be reaching haridwar around 9:30/10:00. I thought of the pros and cons and decided for haridwar so that I as well as the elderly in the group could catch up on some good sleep before the onward journey.

And yes, I will have a driver with me though I myself have much greater experience in driving on the hills than my driver! Most of my experience though is in the hills of Himachal and I know that this route is going to be a bit more difficult.

Wish me good luck.
