Hampi - Getting there and away

During my trip this summer, I'll fly to southern India from Nepal. I was planning on Kerala with a couple of days in Goa. However, I just read about Hampi and it seems interesting. The LP doesn't mention travel times or offer many connections.

If I wanted to include this location, it appears that I'd need to go to and from Goa before heading south.

So,

Anyone know how long it takes from Goa to Hampi on a bus and/or train? Recommendations of private bus companies?
Would it be easier or faster to fly to Bangalore and go Hampi from there before going to Goa?
If I went from Goa, would there be a faster, more direct route to Kerala when I leave? I don't like backtracking, but don't want a direct route that's slower.

Any answers are appreciated.

Thanks!

I believe it takes about 9 hours by car from Goa to Hampi, so I would imagine it taking longer by train or bus. From Hampi, you could get to Kerala via Bangalore, Mysore, and, the beautiful wildlife preserves on the Karnataka/Kerala border. Look at a map and it will become clear.

As Scando said, this is incorrect. You could do it any way you please.

Goa-Hampi I can't advise on. I hear the connection isn't so great; I also hear this should have been improved. Just by way of illustration, I went Mumbai-Bijapur-Hampi-(Hospet is your connection point here)-Mysore-Thalasseri (over Bylakuppe and Madikeri). Just one of many possibilities. I was headed for Bangalore instead of Mysore btw but my connection screwed up and so I took another one.

I hope you've seen this thread?: Hampi: Everything you want to know.

A good question to ask yourself......Am I likely to be the first person who's wanted this information?

If so, ask the questions, if not....

Go the the Forums page and have a look around at the different forums.

In the Indian Railways forum you'll find the Train information thread, in post 2 of that thread you'll find a link to Goa-Hampi trains (info below).

Quote:
Goa - Hampi

Hospet is the closest train station to Hampi (13 km)

Hospet train station is 500m north of the bus stand, buses depart frequently for the 30 minute bus trip to Hampi.

Goa to Hospet (for Hampi)

Train 2848 departs Madgaon (Tu, Th, F, Su. only) at 08:15 and gets to Hospet at 15:10.

Hospet to Goa

Train 2847 departs Hospet (M, W, Th, Sa. only) at 06:30 and gets to Madgaon at 13:43.

This train has a good chance of running up to a couple of hours late as it starts it's journey in Calcutta, get your hotel to check if the train is late, it's a simple telephone call for them.

2-tier air con = Rs 659
3-tier air con = Rs 476
Sleeper Class = Rs 189 (not air con)
There's info somewhere about overnight buses between Goa and Hampi, but it's said to be a very uncomfortable journey.

If you look in the Karnataka forum, the very first thread is a fantastically detailed thread called....

Hampi: Everything you want to know.

A more detailed search will find the following posts.

Cochin-Hampi (via Bangalore, Tirupati or Goa)

And see the post below that for trains on the same route in the other direction.

Private taxi with driver?

This is the online enquiry site for the state govt.s Karnataka State Road Transport http://www.ksrtc.in/AWATAREnquiry/
You can do a search with Hospet [very near to Hampi]. Im not sure if they have a service to Goa. You can also check on redbus.in and ticketvala.com for private bus routes and bookings.

A couple of years ago we went by car from Mumbai to Jog Falls, Belur, Halebid, then to Bangalore to Hampi then to Bijapur and back to Mumbai via Pandharpur and Pune.

If your budget permits you could consider hiring a pvt taxi with driver for the trip which would also give you a chance to experience the countryside. Estimate around INR 1500 per day for an Indica or Ambassador type car plus about INR 200 per day as drivers allowance.

If you are interested, the Karnataka govt. run Hotel Mayura chain of hotels is a modestly priced clean and safe place to stay in Hospet. karnatakatourism.com

http://www.indiatransit.com/
is another useful website for links to surface transport.
