Just to note the obvious, Hospet is not Hampi so you need to get transport from there to Hampi if you go the rail route.

The above car route is a pretty good one by bus and rail northward as well. The contrast between Bijapur and Sholapur is striking..

<cross-posted with Ed. I think there are regular buses between Hospet and Hampi throughout the day and well into the evening though, it's not far, perhaps a half hour or so, shouldn't be a problem, or if arriving at night, you can just spend the night in Hospet, that's what I did. There's nothing much in particular going on there, however I had an excellent cheap room and just observing a town for what it is for a night and a morning can always be worth it. Taxis or auto-rickshaws will also be available -- going one way, you'll need to pay them for the return fare as well, of course. Same goes for hiring a car & driver btw Stephanie, do take note of this if you're not going on a circular route.>

Yes (the first one), however I was very much a young backpacker & just mostly got going by whatever transport came my way, can't remember all of the details.

I think you mean to head on to Bangalore from there, right? I had meant to go Mumbai-Bijapur-Hampi-Bangalore, however my connection on the latter end screwed up & so I thought Oh sod it and ended up going to Mysore instead (nice place btw. No particular reason even, just found it nice & fairly relaxing. All a matter of your mood and what you run into too, isn't it). Hospet-B'lore shouldn't be a problem as such though, there was just some confusion about which bus or train went where I think, so I grabbed another one.

Mumbai-Bijapur I did by a sloooow train if I recall, probably unreserved class. Bijapur I likewise recommend for its excellent sights & lack of (foreign, I think it's popular with domestic visitors) tourists btw.

To Hospet/Hampi I don't remember what I took. And that's pretty much that, not very informative, is it. I'm sure you'll find your way no matter what your age or travel mode, and with better preparation you'll likely find the more decent connections.

Over Goa, wouldn't Mumbai-Bijapur-Goa-Hampi be the better route? Hm, bit of criss-crossing though, maybe it doesn't matter. Best to let it depend on the straightest & swiftest connections I guess. If there are good connections from Goa, Mumbai-B'pur-Hampi-Goa-B'lore might even be something. But maybe your original sequence works out well even.

Good luck & mostly, have fun with it!

(Oh ps when headed for Bijapur, be sure to ask for bijApur if I recall, not bIjapUr as I would naturally pronounce it, or no one will understand what you're on about, LOL Bijapur, sir?! No, never heard of this Ah... you mean Bijapur!!)

Your travel journal is a heck of a post. THANKS ! I have an interest in the Deccan - I'm supposed to have been able to speak Kannadi and Telugu when I was very young - I was born in Gulbarga.

I look forward to following your footsteps this fall.

I’m planning on going to Hampi sometime around the first part of September. My hopes are to get there while the land is still green for the monsoons and before large groups of tourist start showing up. I have been learning a lot by reading Beach site about Hampi but it’s a large site and I will be checking it out more. http://www.hampi.in/
I’m looking at being in India about 18 days, arriving in Bangalore, would like to spend about 6 days in Hampi, then doing some slow traveling seeing other places and possibly leaving from a different airport. I need to get my plane tickets sometime this next week and would sure like some feedback about where to travel and what airport would be good to start and finish this trip from.

Just to give you an idea what I'm looking for,
My main plans are doing a lot of VR photography like I’ve done here: http://www.indiavrtours.com/jaipur/index.html

Thanks all.

Mod Note: This thread is a merging of 2 threads started by slhudson - 'Hampi' and 'Bangalore to Hampi'. I have added Bijapur to the title.

I’m taking your advice about arriving in Bangalore departing from Hyderabad. This will give me around 18 days to explore that area. So far I’m looking at spending about 2 days in Bangalore, a day or two around Badami and about 5-7 days in Hampi.
I would like to see some wild animal places too, along with some good places where I can shoot interesting virtual realty photos like this Akbar Tomb tour that I just finished putting together. http://indiavrtours.com/agra/akbar_gate4.html
