It's not about keeping me happy, I think it's because the 2 titles looked too similar you entered the wrong door!
I just thought a "longer" title might help folks distinguish the 2 threads more readily. Then again, someone might think the 'i' stands for India and post about GIRT in here again. Maybe we shud revert to the old title? NOT - folks, ignore this post, I'm just rambling. Quote:

Details are in the Escape to Kumaon thread. Since it's to be a meetup of Himalayan proportions (emphasis on Himalayan), all correspondence is deliberately being kept in that thread. After all, Ranikhet is in Kumaon and getting out of Delhi at least is an escape! Date/venue is tentative as ksb says, can be moved around for convenience. Start reading at #217. Quote:

Back on IM after a Nap ..... and a Dream
Guys.... I am back after an afternoon Nap (this Darjeeling weather is really cool for a nap with double-blankets on) and a Dream, a real dream this time, not just a day-dream
. Guess what I was doing in the dream? Driving a Landrover over the ZoziLa pass Guys .... do you think I can ask Ratan Tata to sell me a Landrover at an "Indian" price? .... that would be in celebration for his JLR conquest .... and further Indian "Himalayan" dreams!! Er ... does any IMer know Ratan Tata? or even whats-his-name (Ravi Kant?) who did the mega JLR deal?? - KS PS: Dilliwalla: do you think a Landrover is better than a Scorpio or a Balero? I've never driven a Landrover, sir. It is a sturdy vehicle by reputation though.
But as I was reading in another thread, I don't think Tata have announced any concrete plans re introducing it in India. |

defender, discovery, or Range Rover? I got my drivers license on the first - tough old boot of a four wheel drive, rock hard suspension - but if you rolled it down a hill you could just turn it over back onto its wheels and it just kept going.
The discovery is ok - but I've always found them to be very tall - so consequently when you have them on an angle it always feels like its about to fall over. Can't fault the four wheel drive though - once you get the right setting it claws its way through almost anything. |

its heavy....for its size (its about the same weight as the nissan patrol - but the patrol has 2 extra cylinders, 1.2 extra litres of power, and is about 1-2 foot longer in the wheel base). It does have good suspension (coil sprung all round instead of the budget production leaf springs at the back). The engine is great - plenty of torque. 1st gear could be a bit lower - its made for round town motoring whereas in the larger 4x4 1st gear is a very low ratio (basically it gets your off the mark - and then you change into second very quickly - but great for grinding your way out of the mud).

It should be ok. Don't get me wrong - 1st on the safari isn't going to set any speed records - so it should be fine. I just prefer 1st gear to be very low - especially when the vehicle weight is just shy of two tons.
There are times when your trying to pick your way through rocks, very step gradients, deep ruts, etc - where too much speed is going to be a problem. That's where a low first gear is great as you can crawl but still maintain reasonable revs - but no, I think a safari would be great on the GHiRT! |

and i would concur on it being fine for the trip. I can relate to what B is saying since i do drive one around once in a while but it has been restricted to Delhi....there is a lack of power felt but all in all it would be a good option to use.
