Golden Triangle versus Varanasi/Khajurajo

Hi. My boyfriend and I are visiting India for the first time in October. We are "locked in" to Coorg Orange County Resort (timeshare) the second week (southwest of Bangalore) but are flying in and out of Delhi.

We have limited time in the North and (my boyfriend is) are not usually happy with too much rushing around.

We definaely want to se the Taj Mahal (obviously).
I had pretty much decided on doing Varanasi (and possibly Khujurajo) but am wondering if we should do the "Golden Triangle" over Varanasi.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen a lot of posts on train versus car versu tour travel and am thinking a combination of train/car would work. Part of me was thinking the tour option would be good (easy) but I am leaning away from that.

I'd opt for the Varanasi-Khajuraho option. More difficult travel, as in more trains/buses/etc, but for me (I've lived in Varanasi for over a year over 2 trips) and most recently seen Khajuraho for the first time last year, the Varanasi-Khajuraho option is more powerful.
