The most important question is what do you want to do in the mountains?
Are you interested in trekking or you just want to chill out?
Things are much cheaper compared to Goa.

The most popular chill out places are Dharamshala & Manali. Both the places will become very cold after November. On long term basis you can find decent accomodation for Rs.15000 a month or even less.

Clearly, you're looking at shacking up for a month at least. In a cheap hotel, that works out to at the very least 300*30 = 9,000 Rs. That's a little more than 100 sterling, so is that more or less?

There are homestay options in Kumaon these days, and November in Bageshwar would be wonderful, in my view. Unfortunately, I don't have any firsthand information on that front. Suggestion: check out Outlook Traveller's Trekking HOlidays in India, that suggests an Almora-Bageshwar hike with homestaying options.
