Question getting to Delhi: from mumbai or Kolcutta?

hi all,

thanks for having me. my first post here in the forum.
never been to india, but gonna change that in Nov.

my question is:

i'm trying to decide my best option for getting to delhi: mubmai or kolcotta.

ideally i would want a comfy aircon overnight bus or train from from either city to delhi.
but, whats the time to delhi from mumbai>? kolcutta?

any feedback would be much appreciated.

Before you plan any thing please grab a decent map of India. The first thing you should do after getting the map is to have an idea about the size of India and the rough distances between the cities.
You will have to take a train involving overnight travel or fly to reach Delhi from either Mumbai or Kolkata.

if you're flying in from bangkok, take a train from calcutta. your flight ticket's going to be cheaper.
the distance del-cal and del-bom are comparable. both are overnight journeys by train. del-cal is slightly longer by about 200 km.

The fastest trains (Rajdhani Express) take about 18 hours from both Mumbai or Kolkata to Delhi, they generally depart at between 16:00 & 17:00 and get to Delhi at about 10:00 the next day.

You'll need to book these trains in advance, at least a week to 10 days in advance, but maybe a lot more in advance.

For the Mumbai Delhi stretch the Garib Rath is just a shade slower (about an hour I think) and will cost you a lot less money. Mostly new carriages, they will be just as comfortable as the Rajdhani, unless you get a new side berth in 3AC which is a bit cramped.
It leaves from Bandra Terminus.

Price difference works out like this.
Garib Rath Rs 667

Rajdhani Rs 1495

Quite a saving, the drawback is the Garib Rath doesn't offer all the different bedding arrangements. Only 3AC and Chair Class.

Not really accurate, just general.

In reality, you may be lucky to get a confirmed berth on the train of your choice and in the class of your choice, and be able to do this only a couple of days in advance.

Though on busier travel days you may find that booking a month ahead isn't enough.

But it's too difficult to say, we don't even know where you're traveling from, let alone the class or even the date.

One thing's for sure, if you want to take a train, you really should book early, those Rajdhani trains are super fast compared to some other trains running on the same route, at least 8 hours quicker, and as much as 18 hours quicker than some trains.
