Pantelis ... thanks for the excellent suggestion about the Nyingma Monlam. I hope it is a spiritually uplifting experience for you and all of humanity. Since travel plans are pretty well set for arrival in Mumbai on Jan. 7th with departure from Calcutta on 26th it seems unlikely that being in Bodh Gaya anytime from Jan. 10-19 is likely to work. Do you have know what the schedule is like on Jan. 19th as that is probably the only day to possibly be there; or a website? I can only find things about the past but not the upcoming 2008 Monlam, except for one reference to it indicating the last day Jan. 18th.
Thanks Edward

yes 18th is the last day of Nyingma Monlam

but if you really intend & want to go to Bodhgaya, DON'T MISS the trip. It's not touristy as some say but all of us who go there just visit the place for spiritual uplifting as you say What better place than Lord Buddha's spot???Fortunately there aren't bars yet as in Dharamsala -although i love Dharamsala due to His Holiness presence-but still Bodhgaya is peaceful & you could easily relax & meditate.Visit also the Mahakala cave some kilometers away from Bodhgaya, this is the same place when Lord Buddha practised for 6 years austerities but try to go with another person with you there , a guide i would suggest, prefer that option

I was in Bodhgaya 2 months ago. I had the opportunity to stay in the Mahabodhi temple grounds overnight during the full-moon. You can get a permit to stay there 9pm-4am and meditate under the Bodhi tree(or anyhere else on the temple grounds you wish) for 100Rs. You must purchase the permit during the day before arriving. I forget the name of the office where I got the ticket but if you ask at the temple itself they will be able to inform you where to get such a permit. If you're there I'd reccommend it. Bring insect repellant. I also needed a raincoat but didn't have one.

All the best
Jonathan

Excellent suggestion - thanks Johnathan. You say that the permit must be purchased the day before arriving - does that mean the day before full moon day, which would be January 21, 2008? My son would be arriving the morning of full moon day so perhaps he would have to get someone else to get the permit for him.

It should be fine(all Indian bureaucracy considered ) for him to purchase the ticket that same day he arrives. I think it must be done during office hours though. He needs to bring along his passport and some Rupees.

I was just trying to explain that the office where you get the permit and the actual Temple are at separate locations(about 150 metres away from one another). The temple is easy to find so if he just goes there first and asks where he is to go to get a permit to stay overnight at the grounds he should have no problem.

Jonathan

Edit: If he uses a cushion to sit on he will have to provide his own.

Also I'm fairly sure that January is a busy time(many people, monks and puja's) so I hope he has the same opportunity that I had.

Good luck!
