OK, so going by your other thread, you mean to fly from either Kolkata or Mumbai to Velankanni (Velankani, Vailankanni, Velanganni) in Tamil Nadu right?

Flight travel isn't my forte, alas. In the "travel links" link in my signature you'll find some air travel sites that you can check on flights though. I guess a guidebook or map whether on- or offline should be helpful in spotting a nearby airport.

There may well be smaller airports closer by; its nearest airport is given (at Wikipedia and if you search around a little there and follow its external links; the town is supposed to be very close to Nagapattinam [Nagapatnam] which you may more easily find information on) as Tiruchirappalli (Tiruchirapalli, Tiruchchirapali, Trichy, Tiruchi. Airport codes: [IATA code]: TRZ, [ICAO code]: VOTR.) I guess Chennai (formerly Madras) and Madurai would make for about equidistant larger airports. I see now Trichy is listed as an international airport even though, so if that is true it should be major enough you'd think. Again, those air travel sites should be able to help you figure out what's the best airport to fly to.

You'll then have to proceed by whatever road transport you prefer. Trichy-Velankanni is said to be some 165 kms.; Chennai should be some 350 kms. away. Velankanni's nearest railhead should again be in Nagapattinam, 12 kms. away, and said to be connected by rail to both Trichy and Chennai, among many other places. Checking on that for you on some railway sites, I'm not sure if these are direct though, could involve a stopover and/or be very minor local trains. There ought to be buses as well, taxis no doubt (keep in mind going one-way in a taxi you'll naturally be paying for the return fare as well). See also http://www.nagapattinam.nic.in/tour.html and http://www.nagapattinam.nic.in/church.html.

Hope this helps.

Y'r welcome. btw A little further searching would suggest Trichy airport isn't all that splendidly connected after all. Again, those flight sites I pointed to should be able to help you find out what's best or feasible at all. It is, in an Indian context and as you can see, very close to your destination, so would be much preferred if you can get there.

If not and depending on your time and plans (there would be nothing against pushing on in one go I don't think), I guess leisurely trundling down the coast from Chennai something like Kanchipuram-Mahabalipuram-Pondicherry-Chidambaram-possibly Thanjavur (Tanjore), and give or take at will, would make for an obvious and pleasurable route.

Coming from Madurai should that be a good entry point, you could look into something like (sidestep to Kodaikanal, cold in winter btw)-(or go to Rameswaram going east not west)-Trichy-Thanjavur I guess.

Well, just suggestions.

All the suggestions from Machandinha are great. Velanganni is at the ouskirst of Nagapattinam just few km south. The area has a lot of places to discover, most quite close to Velanganni like Nagore, Tarangambali (Tranquebar), Vaithisvarankoil etc.

May be the airport of Pondicherry is also possible (it used to be), otherwise Madurai - Rameswaram and head north to Nagapattinam
should be a great escape coming from Kolkatta.

Thanks, ooff. Working from maps, books, websites, and vague memories really. I sort of lost track rushedly traveling around Tamil Nadu way back when as part of a much longer tour, partly ill along the way, and among so many a Thingumaramramchapalli with sort-of similar temples that I'm never sure where I did actually visit or not Well, getting "templed out" there doesn't seem to be an uncommon theme. I liked it though, no question about it, had a really good time.

Good point, should be like a different planet altogether again really

(btw Kolkata is great, do take your time there. Well, like any metro, a little hard to appreciate just upon landing maybe. If not to say mind-blowing.)

Thank you so much for the value infos...I really have no idea about the Vailankani or any parts of the Indian city...I am just intending to fly in to India on the 28/2/2009.My entry airport is Delhi...I am planning to visit Chandigarh and Kolkotta and may be Mumbai...then to Vailankani..for max stay of 4 weeks..So beside these few cities for say 4 weeks I do not know what other intereting places to visit..What you have suggested about coming down from Chennai for Vailankani I can visit some of the cities on my way to Vailankani.I am quite tempted to do...Can you please advise me more on budget hotels while visiting, especially the few cities that I am intending to cover for my trip..Thank you so much...Eugene
