There are several trains from Bangalore to Chennai - the shatabdi is the fastest and it runs twice a day , 6 am and 4.20 pm and reaches Chennai in 5 hours. You have three more day trains - Lalbagh at 6.30 am , Brindavan and Express - There are also two night trains - Im not sure of the time..you can check www.irctc.co.in .Buses are aplenty - both day and night..check www.redbus.in . The duration is about 5-7 hours. Driving down is comfortable as well -roads are quite good..but I would suggest the trains..

Renting a car will probably involve paying for it/mileage to return to Bangalore at the same rates, so unless you are planning a return trip with the convenience of a car in Chennai, wouldn't recommend it.

bangalore chennai is either a day journey or a night journey. if day journey - you have your A/C chair car and your second sitting. If you are travelling by shatabdi express - you have only A/C chair car and first class.
the drive is lovely - if you take the scenic route - but as the good captain pointed out- if might work out a tad expensive if its just one way.

Railways in India are government owned. There are various classes in both a/c and non a/c coaches. If you are very much in need of clean and comfort, then i suggest you to travel in a/c coaches. The day time trains like shatabdi, lalbagh, brindavan have a/c chair car, something similar to ecomony seating in flight. The night trains will have berths in different classes like 1A,2A,3A (airconditioned) and SL (non airconditioned. The fares in a/c coaches range from Rs392 to Rs1145 depending upon the class of travel 1A,2A,3A. You will get a train ticket for less than Rs200 in non a/c but since you are looking at comfort, non a/c may not be an option. The Shatabdi trains one in morning and the other in evening runs non-stop between bangalore and chennai and meals are included in the fare and the trains are of high priority to railways and always runs on time.

As far as buses are concerned, there are many Volvo a/c buses plying between the two cities. You can browse the web sites www.kpntravels.in / www.ksrtc.in for more info on bus timings and fares.
