Question First timer - need itinerary and transport advice

Hi,

I am leaving for India on 28 June and am aching for some advice/opinions.

My itinerary is
Delhi
bus/ train to Shimla?
Train/bus to Varanasi
Train to Agra
bus/train to Jaipur
"" to Pushkar
"" to Udaipur
"" to Mumbai- home

My main concern is that I have made my plans very loosely because I know I may want to stay longer/shorter in some places. Is it wise to book trains, or just take buses to be less constrained?
Is there anywhere amazing that I am overlooking?

Look forward to the advice!

consider bus from Shimla to Dehra Dun and then a look around Rishakesh and a train from Haridwar to Varanasi.

How long do you have?

Shimla is a huge detour out of an otherwise reasonable itinerary, and not really worth the long journey unless you intend to travel further into Himachal Pradesh.

Other than that, I'd recommend visiting Bundi between Pushkar and Udaipur. And booking trains right now even if you think you won't use them (you can easily cancel them online for a tiny fee). You may find that some of the trains you need are already full and heavily waitlisted, as bookings commence 90 days before date of travel.

It is a bit of a whirlwind tour: 28 June til 18 July. I was thinking Shimla to escape from the heat. Haridwar to Varanasi you say? Thank you!

yeah - we did that trip in 2006, Dehra Dun was a bit of a shitter but it was the easiest way we found to get from McLeod Ganj to Rishakesh (we went to Mussorie also) tried to keep to the hill stations in between time on the plains.

I guess a taxi between Shimla and Haridwar is possible (isn't everything in India?) and you get to see the Ganjes before Varanasi.

In your experiences, is there any leg of this journey that I would be better off flying to? I only want to train/bus on scenic journeys.

in my limited experiance, no. I think you can take trains all around Rajasthan - to those places you've specified anyway, and certainly Udaipur to Mumbai would be cool on train, you may have to go through Ahmedabad - I've never been down that way.
