first time traveller

Hi, I'm taking the plunge & flying out for 6 weeks in India this summer 25th june-6th august.

I'm a 22 year old girl travelling on my own so thought I's play it safe & do the first 3 weeks with an organised tour around Rajasthan to help ease me into the experience! After that I'd love to travel around the south, taking in plenty of beaches & culture en route.

Any route ideas/advice for a girl travelling on her own? All tips very welcome!

Welcome to indiamike

Browse the site; there is a lot of information for the single female traveller here.

An organised tour is not a bad way to start.. though many more experienced India travellers and locals will point out its obvious flaws.

I assume you are travelling in the next couple of months.. you do know most of these areas will be hot, I am sure.

Thanks for the reply,

yes I'm planning to arrive late june and stay until early august so am prepared for extreme heat & possibly monsoons! Unfortunately I'm limited on the months I can travel because of uni/work commitments but am determined to make the most of the time I have free to explore.

Be aware that the culture shock you would receive in the north maybe a bit accentuated, as against the relatively easier south where you would be exploring on your own. So do not be bogged down in case of negative 'vibes'..

Thanks that's reassuring! Yes I've heard that the north is not a particularly easy place to start out, thats part of the reason I'm opting for the dreaded organised tour group...

getting a bit worried...is it really that bad?

hey, I came upon this thread, and Im feeling a bit weirded out: is it really that bad to go on your own like that? Im also a female first-time traveller during this period (age 27) and Im gonna head for the north to avoid the heat. This thread has got me a bit worried though.
hm.. happy for some kind of reassuring response, or an explanation of why it is so bad to be in the north, alone, female without a travel group, and green.

Rabbit -you have absolutely nothing to worry about. I am also a solo female and my first trip to India was to the north. It was a bit of a culture shock but a very interesting one at that. At no time did I feel my safety was at risk even though I was often stared at - but I was a woman on her own and that is unusual in India. My second solo trip was to the south and to be honest, I did not find it nearly as fascinating as the north. It was certainly beautiful and the food was fabulous but for me, the North was more challenging and enjoyable. In fact, I am going back again for trip number three in a few months.

There should not be any problems for single female travellers in North, just keep few things in mind and things will sail smoothly..

most important would be dressing..

Kat, thank you thank you, that was exactly what I wanted to hear.
The north seem to have so much that I want to experience, especially on the spiritual side.
This is great, Im gonna go with your words now, and not worry anymore. And if I like it this time, Ill go back for the south later
