First time in INDIA

Help. I'm cruising from Dubai to India and will fly from Cochin to Delhi and then fly back to NYC. I'd like to stay over in Delhi and try to get to the Taj mahal at least. I think i get into airport in Delhi at 7:20 pm on a wed and will return from Delhi to NYC on Sunday. What do I have time to explore? Can't pass up this chance to see India, even if it is for 2 days. Thanks so much for your advice and help. NOSAM

Why not stay in Cochin and take a houseboat ride through the backwaters? Maybe explore the beaches. South India has its charms, too.

The Taj is spectacular. But going Coshin-Delhi-Agra-Delhi-Cochin over 3 days, you might find that your trip to India consists solely of rushing around on planes and trains and automobiles.

I'm actually flying to delhi from cochin. probably spending the nite in delhi. Thursday am going to agra. I have Friday and Saturday and then on Sunday i'll have to be back in Delhi to fly back to nyc. Any suggestions on itineraries would be appreciated. This trip just came up and I'm staying on for a few days to get to know India. Just thought I should see the Taj at least

tried and tested route -
go to jaipur from agra thursday night or friday morning.
sightseeing in jaipur for 1.5 to 2 days.

return to delhi on saturday night/sunday morning depending on the time of your flight.

Thank you all for your suggestions My Wed nite 7pm thru Sunday am noon stay in Delhi, Agra and jaipur is coming together. Will probably have to spend wed nite in Delhi since I get to the airport from cochin at 7pm. Early Thursday am i'll train to agra, see the taj mahal and maybe lunch and time for one other site. spend the nite in Agra or travel late on Thursday to Jaipur and spend THursday nite there. I'll have Friday and Sat to explore and then I think I'll have to fly back to delhi for sat nite since my flight is on Sunday at noon. Flying sunday am to make this flight is probably not a great idea i assume. Any thoughts on more time in agra, or jaipur (what to do here) or even more time in Delhi. Thanks
should I book hotels and travel now befoe I get there or wait and book there when I travel?
On a little budget but willing to pay $100.00+ US for a hotel. What is homestay like? Sounds interesting to me.

Flying is a waste of time in delhi-jaipur sector.

There are very frequent and comfortable Volvo buses between this two cities. Take a volvo bus from jaipur saturday late afternoon/evening. You will reach delhi late at night and can comfortably take your sunday noon flight

http://www.rsrtc.gov.in/time_table.a... ategory_id=2

Thursday - agra sightseeing - taj and agrafort/fatehpur sikri

friday - reach jaipur around noon - jaipur sightseeing - city palace, hawa mahal

saturday - jaipur sight seeing - jaigarh, nahargarh, amer.

In Jaipur you will get nice hotels in Rs 2000 to 3000(40 to 60 dollars).

http://www.chirmi.com/

There are lots more in this style/price range.

As you are on a very tight schedule, I assume you would not like to waste time visiting and haggling with hotels. Call up the hotels from delhi or agra and see if they have place and book them.

thank you for your great suggestions and links to hotels. Would I be safe waiting to book or should I book before I leave? Also, any suggestions on where to stay in Delhi?

Well, due to the current climate I've decided to spend all 3 nites in Delhi at Hotel Yuvraj 38, Arakashan Road, Ram Nagar, New Delhi. Anyone heard of this hotel? Advice? Tips about the area? I'll early morning train to Agra and train back to Delhi. Instead of stopping in Jaipur. this seemed like an awful lot of time travelling when I really just wanted to get a first taste of India, taj mahal, fort in agra and delhi highlights. Jaipur next time I think.
