First time in India: Mumbai-Goa-Kerala advice
Hi
I'm sure this route has been covered many times on here so I apologise if I make anyone repeat themselves, but I have had a look around and can't seem to find quite what I'm looking for. It's my first time in India this January, landing in Mumbai on the 7th January and staying for two months. My friend and I would like to do the Mumbai-Goa-Kerala route, then I suspect she will carry on while I will make my way back to Mumbai, maybe through Karnataka. She has been travelling in Eastern Europe for six months and I think is looking forward to somewhere she can relax, so we'd quite like to find somewhere with good beach parties for a week or two - hence the stop off in Goa - but we certainly don't want to spend the whole time doing that. We're also really interested in doing a yoga retreat somewhere. Can anyone suggest an itinerary? I'm getting a bit concerned that we may have left it too late to book trains... any advice you can give me would be much appreciated! |

Hi,
I will not be able to advise much on your itenary. Depends on how much time you want to spend on each activity. Since you said two weeks in Goa, you could head there after a couple of days in mumbai. And after your partying head to Kerala,Sivananda Yoga centre, Neyyar Dam to do a basic yoga course. You could plan your activities, backwater trips, beaches and Kochi after that. Any particular place you want to visit in Karnataka (Hampi maybe?) However, the trains tickets may not be a problem during Jan-Feb except mid Jan when there are a couple of public holidays coming up. You can avoid travelling in mid Jan.

Mumbai - Goa - Kerala:
I suggest you take the early morning train from Mumbai to Goa, costs around $3 USD, leaves from Mumbai at 5.30 AM and reaches Goa by 1PM. Spend as many days as you want in Goa for all your parties/fun! Now it would be the time to relax and for that I suggest you head off to Karwar, which is in Karnataka and just 2.5 hours by vehicle. Hire a taxi and once you reach Karwar, ask for the Jungle Lodges office and go to Devbagh, a private Island off the coast off Karwar where you can rent loghuts/tents for around $60 -$70 a night and just chill out in the lagoon and if you are lucky, play with dolphins that come quite close to the shore. There is a small lake in the middle of the Island where you can do a bit of kayaking. You can also do quite a bit of snorkeling here in the sea. From Karwar, take a train and head to Cochin. Now you have a relaxed body and an uncluttered mind, you can start your spiritual journey!! Explore the 1000 year old temples, Ayurvedic massages, and great scenic landscapes! |
