Final leg of Rajsthan itinerary This is it! ...

Unless anyone has a better idea! Altogether we have 5 weeks and as everyone knows I have been dithering and dillying. So thanks Steven Ber for all your train suggestions, I wish I could do more train travel but the lure of the road and stopping off when we please won out.. maybe next time we'll make it a train trip.

I know its a little loopy at the end (literally I mean) - but the Jaipur - Mumbai flight was the cheapest and is booked, and I really wanted to see Bundi and stay in a Castle.

After beginning in Udaipur (4 nights incl NYEve), bus to Ranakpur etc (1 night in Ghanerao), bus to Jodhpur (4 nights & 3 days), drive to Jaisalmer via Osiyan for lunch(4 nights 3 full days).....

here is what I've planned.. should be in the 'swing' by the time we get to this bit so I've stepped up the pace a little. But I could steal a day from Jodhpur to add onto the end if people think this is a good idea. I'm sure I can move the Jaisalmer/ApaniDhani accom by one day & the rest isn't booked yet.

Leave Jaisalmer really early - I'm planning a dawn photo stop - car and driver to Nawalgarh (long drive, lots of stops etc)
3 nights Apani Dhani eco resort - wander around Shekhawati 2 full days.

Leave early, drive to Delhi - should be half day drive (or look at train option here - need to do more research).

4 nights, 3.5 days in Delhi

Train to Amritsar
2 nights Amritsar - temple, border crossing etc

Train to Delhi - another half day and night in Delhi

Early train to Agra

One night Agra

Leave early - car and driver to Bundi - full day drive, stop along the way.

(Was going to put Rathambore in here but after reading threads re scarcity of tigers and cold and lacklustre accom decided to press on past it.. we will go to the National Park in Mumbai instead and try to see a wild leopard!)

3 nights, 2 full days Bundi

Car and driver to Castle Bijaipur - 2 nights

Leave early - Car and Driver to Pushkar 1 night in Pushkar (we were going to Haridwar but sadly it just wouldn't work out with timing and travelling so Pushkar it is.)

Leave after lunch Drive to Jaipur

2 nights Jaipur - 1.5 days - a bit rushed I know, but I screwed up the Mumbai flight.

7.30 am flight to Mumbai (booked and unchangeable, I meant to book a day later and got all mixed up so...)

5 nights and 6 days in Mumbai.... then back to Sydney 8pm flight.

We'll use this time to do lots of shopping, maybe get a suit made, my son wants some tabla lessons etc...and really try and get to know Mumbai a bit and try to chill out a bit before back to school and work etc.

I'll take votes on whether to steal a day from Jodhpur to add to either Pushkar or Jaipur.... Bearing in mind we will still be finding our India legs at the end of our first week. I was thinking we could spend a day in the countryside around Jodhpur.

Any suggestions? This is it folks... over the top (to quote a great Aussie band from the 70s!)

By the way - I know I'll post more threads and stuff, but I could never have worked out this itinerary and made the bookings and planned everything without IM so a big cheer and big big thanks to all you wonderful people.

I see that you've decided not to go to Ranthambore - us too. And weird, but we're going to Apani Dhani as well for 2 nights!

Wow, that's a really confusing itinerary. But I have a mild case of OCD so I'd do it differently. But each to their own. I so want to go to the border crossing thining in Wagah. I saw it on Michael Palin's Himalaya and ever since I wanted to go there.

Thumbs up

Great choices. Hard work, but it will be very rewarding. Ghanerao is quaint. In the courtyard, you will see large rounded stones with holes in the middle. These are elephant parking bays!. Hundreds of family photos on the walls. Castle Bijaipur is equally fine. No two castles are the same and no two rooms are similar. A great experience. Whilst in Jodhpur, please do take a drive into the Tribal lands that surround the city. There are Tribal safaris, about a half day, which give a good insight into their lives. Safe travels.

Thanks guys - I know it is a bit confusing, that's what happens when you make decisions as you go. I decided I wanted to be in Udaipur for NY Eve and that we'd save the big cities until we'd got used to things - then it just kind of took on its own life from there...We have to fly in and out of Mumbai as we used our qantas ff points (years of using the credit card!).

I saw that Michael Palin episode too - that's why we are going to Amritsar, and the temple of course!
