Even 5000-6000rupees per night sounds like a lot of money to me!
Why not,not book and check them out when you come and choose a nice one much less costly? Would that be possible. Then you have bargaining at your fingertips. Is this amount the usual amount people pay per night, it is a fortune! I could understand 2000 rupees, but not this. Are these boats rare? Is there something super special about them?

Hey one other question. I haven't booked my flight from Cochin to Agatti yet. Anyone have recommendations on where I should call to arrange that? Call Indian Airlines directly?

Thanks for any tips. Hope to get that out of the way tonight.

If Kingfisher or Jet Airways do this route try them - from posts on IM it seems they are much better! However, if no choice then IA - first try by their website bookings.

5000 to 7000 per night is the normal rate of kettuvelums (house boats) during season. Usually all of them have similar facilities (which is actually very nice). they are quite nicely decorated too. quite a luxurious feeling.

If Casino Hotel/Antony Viju is booking your visit to Bangaram then they can book your flight as well.
Note: Kingfisher is nearly twice as expensive as Indian Airlines. Indian Airlines flight has a strict luggage limit of 10kg per person whereas Kingfisher allows 25kg. Both these airlines operate on different days so you if you have fixed the date you are going then you might not have a choice of airline. Also bear in mind that if it happens that you fly to Agatti via Kingfisher but return via Indian airlines then you wil have to limit your luggage out to 10kg. This shouldn't be a problem as you need very little luggage on the island but you might have to store excess luggage in Kochi.

Thanks Nayan for enlightenment re houseboat prices - they are practically the equivalent of staying here in Fort Rajwada (luxury 4star plus hotel, all marble and spectacular stone carvings), or even Taj group hotels....

This thread is awesome. I hope it helps people going to Lakshadweep for years to come!

I have a question about getting the reasonably priced houseboat.

Will I be okay just asking the hotel the night before, to tell me how to catch the train from Ernakulam to Alappuzha, and then after arriving in Alappuzha do the boat spot check and be on my way?

Any idea on approximately what time the trains start running in the morning? I guess we should get an early start! Train riding in India is always a great adventure as well.

Or, would you highly recommend the taxi instead? About what would the price and travel time difference be?

Thanks for everything guys
