Divide 4 to 5 days Kottayam and Alleppey?

Greetings, IMers

With 4 to 5 days/nights in Kottayam/ Alleppey, how would YOU divide your time?

Stay entire time in Kottayam (homestay on one of the canals nr Vembanad lake)
or spend part of it, with another 1 -2 days at Alleppey homestay?

If it helps to give guidance, after this we'll be heading to Kochi for 2 nights, last stop of a two week trip through parts of Karnataka and Kerala.

We will NOT be spending overnight on kettuvalam, in case that also helps narrow suggestions/recommendations.

Thank you for your trip tips and ideas!

Hi Rebecca, and welcome from another Oaklandish girl!

I was in the area about three years ago: did a couple of nights on the backwaters, leaving from Alleppy, and ending in Kottayam.

Having only passed through these places, I can only say Kottayam looked much nicer than Alleppy. I suppose if you're staying away from town in Alleppy it would be fine, and I've read many happy reviews from people who have done homestays there. Don't know how to describe the difference other than Kottayam looked more "upscale"

Anyone out there with more recent and personal experience?

Backwater Area

Try & spend time in Both, A suggestion for Kotayam
area, hire a country boat and go around and check out the upmarket Resorts around Kumarakom region,
pop in for a look and a cup of tea or a nice cold
beer, Taj Garden Retreat, Coconut Lagoon,Coco Bay,
etc, also bird santuary in this area.

All the best

Hi, and thank you both for your replies.
Good idea, Vandy!
SitaP, yes, we have heard good things about some of the Alleppey area homestays, I think the one we're hoping for is a bit out of town.
"Oaklandish"?? WHERE??!!!
