I had some trouble finding a direct bus to Palitana. Called a few travel agents who all told me that there was no direct bus and I would have to go to Bhavnagar.

Fortunately, I finally ended up finding a direct bus from Ahmedabad to Palitana run by Shrinath Travels. I bought the ticket from Limda Travels near Paldi Bus Station. The Bus leaves at 7 AM and arrives in Palitana at 11 AM. Return bus is through Bhumi Travels and leaves Palitana at 2:00 PM arriving in Ahmedabad at 7:00 PM.

Afterwards, I also found out that I could have booked the bus tickets online through makemytrip.com.

Stayed in a dharamshala and ate at a bhojanalaya, so cannot comment on any hotels or restaurants.

Cheers!

Sorry! I am a Jain which is why I stayed at a dharamshala. But nobody asked for proof, so I don't think the dharamshala's are just for jains. They are probably open to anyone who wants to visit the temples and are willing to follow the rules.

I had visited palitana a few years back,we had stayed at pannalal dharamsala(can't recollect the exact name). I have lost their contact number so i can't recommend it to anyone..we spoke in gujarati and we told them we were non jains. The manager was ok with it but he said not all dharamsalas allow non jains though i am not sure whether foreigners would be allowed.
So it would be good if you give us the contact no. of some dharamsala.

Hi Ashwin,

I am Indian and they probably figured out from my surname that I was a Jain which is why I had no problems staying at a dharamshala.

i realise this is an old thread, but does anyone have anymore info on this? i looked at shrinath travel's website, and there is no option to travel to palitana. or would it be under another city's name?
also, did you see the temples on the day you got there, or the next day?

Caramel - I'm researching for my own Gujarat itinerary extensively myself for my upcoming trip in the last week of December this year. From what I've learnt, there're three possibilities:

a) Direct bus to Bhavnagar (you can take local transportation for the remaining 50 kms). Kabra travels runs both AC and non AC buses. http://www.kabratravels.com/tour_information.htm

b) Train to Bhavnagar terminus (#12971 leaves Ahmedabad at 05:45 and reaches Bhavnagar at 11:30 every day). It would be local transport from there.

c) Ordinary bus using GSRTC direct to Palitana: There's one every hour from 05:00 until 08:00 and then about 6 more until late in the evening. These are ordinary buses though. http://www.gsrtc.in/GSRTCEnquiry/

d) Also, from reading information online, i do not think it's possible to see the temples the day you reach since there's a climb (however gentle - but long - 3500 steps i think) involved. The temple complex closes at sunset and everyone is required to leave.

Did you try with makemytrip.com? It's been a while and things change.

I saw the temples on the next day -- climbing very early in the morning is best because there are fewer climbers and it is more peaceful.

There aren't manu buses from Palitana to Amedabad, just 4 of them. There are a couple of private buses too leaving in the morning.
While going from Ahmedabd, buses start at 11am,till3.30 pm. If you miss these,go by the Bhavnagar bus to Songadh and then take another bus from there.Just tell the conductor you want to go to Palitana, then he'll drop you at the appropriate stop. And it's worthwhile going all the way to Bhavnagar just to buy pendhas and gathia.

The buses that I know of leave from the Ahmedabad main bus stand(govt. ones). I dont know from where the private buses leave.
While returning from Palitana the private buses leave from the Talethi area, ask any travel agent in that area.

If you guys are traveling from A'bad to Palitana, opt for Bhavnagar train (runs overnight) ....get down at Songadh in the morning and take a private vehicle to Palitana. This would save a lot of your day time. As stated by Ashwin, even if you are opting for a bus.....don't go till Bhavnagar.

Wherever you stay, Taleti should be in vicinty with not more than 15-20 mins walk.

Going by the older posts, I would say give hotels a miss and stay in dharamshala.

Thanks Jatin. However, my concern is (from material available on the internet), that the Dharamshala option is not available to single travelers?

I'm visiting quite a few temple towns (Palitana, Junagadh (principally for Girnar), Prabhas Patan (for Somnath) and Dwarka) so dharamshala will be my first choice but now I'm in a quandry over what to do ...

do you have any experience with dharamshalas in Gujarat?

Also, on the train option - I see only one train starting from Ahmedabad at 5:45 am (all other trains are once a week). Is that the one (12971 - bhavnagar express)

There are many dharamshalas which will allow you(though there are many which wont allow you). My advice to you is reach by evening(by bus),get some good rest and start early in the morning for the climb. Have lunch(1 pm) and dinner(5pm) and then proceed for your further journey.
