I guess there are a number of direct buses these days, but I enjoyed doing that journey by rail. I got an early-morning bus the 17km from Dharamsala to the Kangra Mandir station, where I picked up the narrow gauge train for the 94km trip to Pathankot. Then, I caught a broad gauge train to Amritsar - it takes 3 hrs to do the 110km. I guess the whole trip took most of the day, but it was very enjoyable. I'd recommend 1st class for the narrow-gauge train. Take some food, too.

Avoid Pathankot if possible

I traveled from Amritsar to Darhmsala and had to go through unfortunately i had to travel through Pathankot. Pathankot in my experience was unavoidable sometimes for buss/train travel, but nonetheless if there was any possible alternative route i whish i would have known. Pathankot was a dirty, noisy, and horrible place to wait for a bus or train. If you can avoid it, i would. Its not the end of the world, but it made my travel partner sick from all the polution.
