Dharamsala, manali in 2 weeks in September possible?

Hey everyone, this is my first ever post on IM. First of all what a great forum this is especially for people like me who’ve never really traveled much before. I’m from India but living in Melbourne for the past 4 years and haven’t really seen much in India. Anyhow, I’m 25 year old male and would like to go finally on my first travel visit to India.

I’ll be flying to my hometown of Ahmedabad and stay there for a week and then depart for delhi and arrive on 31st August and from then I need your help to plan my itinerary for 2 weeks. I don’t intend on spending any time in Delhi. I’d like to go visit Dharamsala, Manali and other surrounding places. I have a little less than 2 weeks as I have until 10th September night to travel since I need to reach Chennai on 11 Sep as I have a flight back at 2300 hours, but I’m planning on catching a plane from Delhi to Chennai on 11th.

I know it is a very short time but that’s all I could manage to get from my work. Is it possible to cover dharamsala and manali, kasaul and manala areas. Also other suggestions are welcome as I have never been to that part of India and so I have no idea on the places.

I’m not really looking for any tourist destinations or to see any temples or anything, I just would like to spend some time in these areas, chill out, read books, enjoy nature, meet beautiful people and eat delicious Indian food. I’m low on budget and your suggestions on where I can save money and cheap accommodation would be of great help too. I guess I’m asking for a lot but I didn’t know any other place than IM to look for these answers. Hope to hear all your suggestions very soon and thanks for reading my post in the first place.

Peace, love and unity,
Abhi..

Both Manali & Dharamshala have many budget hotels. You can stay for as low as Rs. 150 per day. Both the places have very nice restaurants offering many cuisines. Dharamshala is truely spectacular in that sense.

Manali & Dharamshala are very well connected by buses. You may decide to go to any place first. For Manali yo get Volvo from Delhi. If you wish to go to Dharamshala/Mcleodganj first then many buses leave from Majnu ka Till in New Delhi.

If you have specific queries, do let us know.

Thats a lot of time for that circuit - you can happily throw in Mcleodganj as well into your plans.

BrownRabbit, do Dharamsala/McLeodganj first.
Then take a day bus to Kullu.
From Kullu hop on to any bus headed for Manikaran and get off at Kasol, which is 4 kms short of Manikaran.
There are many budget hotels at Kasol. You can then do the trek to Malana village or even take a taxi as there is now a motorable road to Malana!!

After you've had your fill of Kasol/Malana you can take a bus to Manali.
