Delhi/Varanasi to Kathmandu via Darjeeling
Hi
Is it possible to go by train from Delhi or Varanasi to Kathmandu via Darjeeling? If not, then what is the best way to incorporate Darjeeling during a trip from Delhi to Kathmandu? Thanks |

It's not possible to go by train to Kathmandu, there is only a small section of railway in Nepal and it isn't on any route to Kathmandu.
You can take a train from Delhi or Varanasi past Nepal to New Jalpaiguri (Siliguri), then take the scenic toy train to Darjeeling.

India - Nepal Crossing
A convenient way to reach Kathmandu from Darjeeling is to make a land crossing of the border at Panitanki(India) to Kakarvita(Nepal) then take a Nepali domestic flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu.
Panitanki(where you clear India migration) is reached by a 30 minute share jeep ride from Siliguri. The bordercrossing can be made by cycle rickshaw. At Kakarvita you can buy a Nepali tourist visa. The airport is about 50 minutes away by taxi. There is another airport at Biratnagar in south-east Nepal but it is futher away from the border crossing mentioned. I made this trip from Darjeeling to Kathmandu in March this year. I was able to book and pay for the Nepali flight in Darjeeling receiving a voucher which I exchanged for the actual air ticket at a travel agent in Kakarvita. DISCLAIMER: The border crossing has been closed some of the time in recent months because of general turmoil in the Terai. Last edited by unclelach : Jul 19th, 2007 at 08:03. Reason: Factual error: airport is/was Bhadrapur not Biratnagar |

Correct. You can also take the overnight bus services from Kakarvita to Kathmandu but the flight is much more comfortable. |
