Delhi to Mumbai Itinerary
I am planning to fly to Delhi from the UK and return home from Mumbai about two weeks later. Using public transport, I was thinking of a route taking in Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Ahmadabad.
Is this route practical? Are all the destinations worthy of a stop? Am I missing anything out along the way? Having not visited India before, I am grateful for any advice. Thanks, GHS |

Hi Ghs,
You might find this thread useful: So many places so little time. It covers the areas you're interested in plus a few more, and discusses train times and trains v cars. Also invaluable is Steven Ber's train thread which lists every train ever ever in the country ever or something or nothing: Trains! This one, although it doesn't end with Mumbai, is a Rajasthan trip in the same amount of time to a lot of the same places: Rajasthan (14 nights) It's certainly possible, but I don't think you should add any more stops, you don't really have time. I hope all that will get the ideas flowing! ![]() |

Reply to Plan of touring Jaipur-Agra-Udaipur and Jodhpur suggestion
Dear Ghs,
I trust you will find the itinerary useful. SInce you are traveling to near by places in the delhi agra jaipur area and jodhpur I suggest you stick to intercity trains as they are cleaner and since they have quicker turn around times and do not depend on incoming rakes or the prospect of delay of a train coming from a far away place. From Jodhpur you can take the Jammu Ahmedabad train. The rest of the train suggestions are below. Do not miss the metre gauge ride to Udaipur! I hope you enjoy Indian Railways, the systems and working conventions are the same as the UK and the spirit of IK Brunel [whose everlasting edifice is near Plymouth] is alive in India! Delhi to Agra Shatabdi Express 2002- train number leaving Delhi at 6.00AM and reaching Agra at 8.12 or the Taj Express leaving Delhi at 7.12 AM and reaching Agra at 10.07AM AC Chair Car accommodation is available Agra to Jaipur- 2988 Gwalior Jaipur Intercity leaving Agra at 17.40hrs getting you in to Jaipur at 22.20Hrs. AC Chair Car Accommodation is available. It is better to stick to these intercity trains unlike long distance trains which may get late. Jaipur to Jodhpur---2465 RANTHAMBORE EXP *JAIPUR 17:40 JODHPUR JN 23:00 or +MARUDHAR EXPRES *JAIPUR 11:50 JODHPUR JN 18:20 which has 3AC [Marudhar may get late especially the day the train takes a relatively longer route via Ayodhya and Faizabad] or the 473 +PURI JU EXPRESS JAIPUR 06:30 JODHPUR JN 13:10 which is only on thursday and is a decent train unless there are bad reports of its late running to falsify the claim. 6126 +JU MS EXPRESS JODHPUR JN 21:00 AHMEDABAD JN 06:30 to avoid getting in at 3.15 AM but the above train is only on Mondays. The other choice for a day journey is the 9224 Jammu Tawi Ahmedabad Express which does not have 3AC but has 2AC and sleeper leaving Jodhpur 6.35 and reaching Ahmedabad at 16.10hrs [a good option in my view considering the public transport facilities being available in the city at that time]. Udaipur take the overnight train from Ahmedabad. Jaipur Udaipur is also possible by an overnight train. But then you need to get back to Jaipur to go to Jodhpur.Metre Gauge ride and a really enjoyable one. Not to be missed plus some interesting countryside. Cheers York_Katni |

Thanks for all the advice and links. On reflection, I was wondering whether it would be a better use of time, and would avoid trying to do too much, to fly both in and out of Delhi and just stick to Rajasthan. If I choose this approach, are there any other must see places not on my original itinerary.

However all the intercity rides are not more than 6 hours and you can get a chance to savour the country side. Metre gauge trains are a unique experience. It depends of each individual's program and commitments. Each of these journeys are not the 2 nights and one day type.

I would skip either Jaipur or Jodhpur (even thought both places are great) and spend more time in Udaipur. That city just needs more than a day or two!
