Delhi to Culcutta

Hi,

So this is my proposed itiniary from Delhi to Culcutta. Its my first time in India. After culcutta, we will be heading south.

all advice is very welcome, including comments on timing as well as how to get to and from places. I think we'd prefer trains.

The days are guides, as I havent really factored in travel times, overnight trains etc.

any help you could give would be great!

12th december -15th delhi (too long?)
16 - 19th rishikesh
20 - 21 hardiwar
22 - 23 agra (will we have to stop the night in delhi?)
24 - 25 orcha
26 - 27 khajariho (sp?)
28 - 1 varanasi
2 - 4 culcutta

I did Delhi-Varanasi-Bodhgaya-Kolkata a few years back. I can't really directly compare my trip with your proposal but Bodhgaya was unique and is worth a mention.

Bodhgaya is the place where the Buddha reached enlightenment. It is mostly quiet and calm and the tree area (under which he meditated) is wonderful to see. There isn't a lot to do there unless you take a meditation class etc but I had no trouble being there for a few days just looking around watching the few backpacker trying really hard to catch up to the Buddha.

We took a car from Varanasi direct to Bodhgaya. Then picked up the train to Kolkata. You have to go to nearby Gaya for it, which frankly I found a horrible place with knee deep mud... ug.

We found Kolkata really great and which we had more time to spend there.
