Vasanth you should definitely do Chandertal. I am sure the bike would be able to handle it. There is very less traffic on the routes you have planned,so it would be a good adventure.

Sadly my trip is over, but it has been an exciting and learning experience for me. I captured more than 600 pics, ironically the naked eye is the best camera. A cannon or nikon pic cannot recreate the ex c itment of being there. I will be sharing the pics and my experience once i get back. All the best for your trip.

Hi dude,

My name is Anand (from Mumbai), new to this forum. We are planning a trip to spiti with four friends of mine. itenirary is as follows :

Day 01 (7th August 2009) : Mumbai - Chnadigarh - Rampur
Day 02: (8th August 2009) Rampur – Sarahan – Sangala
Day 03: (9th August 2009) Sangla - Chitkul – Kalpa
Day 04: (10th August 2009) Kalpa
Day 05: (11th August 2009) Kalpa to Chango – Sumdo - Tabo
Day 06: (12th August 2009)Tabo to Kaza
Day 07: (13th August 2009) kaza
Day 08: (14th August 200 9) Kaza to Chandratal
Day 09 – (15th August 2009) Chandertal to Mandi
Day 10 – (16th August 2009) Mandi to Chnadigarh to Mumbai

Can u help on these??

1) Where to take a halt Chango, Sumdo or Tabo??
2) Is there any place to stay at Chandratal or we need to carry tents with us??
3) Condition of Road from Kaza to Chandrtal and within how many hours can one reach there??

1) Where to take a halt Chango, Sumdo or Tabo??

See answer 5. Stay overnight at Nako and then do Nako to Kaza in one day. Nako to Kaza easily doable with 2.5 hrs stop at Tabo and 1.5 hrs detour to Gue. Gue is an 11 km detour from Sumdo. There is the mummy of a Lama at Gue. Let me know if you need more details

2) Is there any place to stay at Chandratal or we need to carry tents with us??

No place to stay at Chandertal, carry tents

3) Condition of Road from Kaza to Chandrtal and within how many hours can one reach there??

I have not been on the Kaza to Chandertal road. The signboard says "jeepable". Its approx 8 kms long. Gravel road, narrow and steep. You may have to trek for the last 1 km

4) Chandratal to Manali , how many hours it will take??

Easily doable in a day. Even if you take long breaks enroute.

5) Condition of Maling nallah, is it fine now??

You will have to cross the Malling Nallah, just after Nako. It is on the road from Nako to Chango. This is a new road which has been built which crosses the Nallah at a higher point. Due to this new road you also have an option to spend a night at Nako as Nako is just a kilometer detour from this new road. From Nako, Sumdo is another 30 kms and Chango 17 kms. Nako is a beautiful place.

I have seen Innovas,Sumos and Altos cross it successfully. We helped take the baggage of three bikers in our Innova across the Nallah so it would not get wet. The bikers made it across the Nallah without much difficulty.Best time to cross Malling Nallah would be before noon. My experience is the water flow increases as the day goes by.

6) Constact no. of any rented vehicle??

Where will you be taking the rented vehicle from Chandigarh ?

7) Hotels on this route??? shall we book HPTDCin advance or go there n book???

Please book in advance

1) whether this itinerary is fine or u will suggest any changes.
there is nothing much to see in kalpa so, I would not suggest you spend one day over there. recong peo sucks big time. there is nothing to see over there and almost everyone gets drunk by evening. the road between rampur and powari is pathetic due to hydro power project(hope its over by august). Instead, you can proceed towards Tabo and spend one extra day over there.

2) We planning a halt at Nako as suggested by monkeyboy.
Nako is definitely a good place to stay since its very picturesque and serene.
3) Can you please let us know the places to stay on this route at all places
You will find places to stay pretty easily expect for Losar (3 hotels & 1 PWD guest house), Chattru (no brick & mortar accomodation, only tents) and Chotta Dhara (one PWD guest house and no hotels). You could book the PWD guest houses in advance which is almost there in every place possible on the way.

4) Is it advisable to book at all places in advance??
5) Can we do Pin valley and Dhankar on the way to Kaza from nako.
You can but i would suggest you spend the night at Pin Valley since its a beautiful place and worth the time you spend over there.

6) Places to cover in Pin Valley
7) Places which are must visit on this trip considring we have 10 days and we will travel by a rented jeep from Chandigarh to Chandigarh.
Tabo, Gye (monk mummy), Dhankar, Kaza, Kye...oh one more thing..once in Kaza, look for the Khasger hotel, it is situated right towards the end on the right hand side. Once you find it, ask for Puran( he was our guide, very nice guy). he will take you to a place called Langza. Please go there, you will be mesmerised by the beauty of that place. I don't think this place is on the map, only the locals know about it.

Vasanth are you back from your trip. How did it go ?? I missed Langza (definitely next time).

I am still in the process of uploading around 600 high quality pics to Flickr, will share with everyone once I am done.

Anand, I guess most of your questions have been answered by Vasanth.

Some more answers,

8) Should we stay at Chitkul instead of Sangala?

Yes definitely, Chitkul is a much better place to stay.

9) Chandratal to Mandi in one day possible??

Chandertal to Mandi not possible in one day. I hope you meant Chandertal to Manali. Chandertal to Manali is easily doable in one day.

10) Chandratal night stay is advisabel or to there n come back, we have kept one day for chandratal??

Night stay advisable at Chandertal. Carry your own tents.

Vasanth is right Kalpa and Recong Peo have nothing special. I used Kalpa as a stop on my journey further. If you are interested there is a small village ahead of Kalpa. The name of the village is Roghi. Its 6 or 7 kms from Kalpa. I found it peaceful. Its worth a visit just for half an hour or so, you can walk around the village.

Another option is to hire a taxi from Delhi. In Delhi you can find many taxi operators who spcialize in hill driving ( which is hard to find in Chandigarh)

yes monkeyboy, i am back from my ride...came in to delhi yesterday...this ride of mine was of a different kind...i always used to think that ladakh was the toughest ride but this one surpasses it by miles...especially the terrain between losar to gramphoo...man it beat the daylights out of us...

hey i don't know if you have been following the journal that I had been maintaining in this website throughout the ride...in there i made a mention about the assistance that i got from you..you definitely contributed a whole lot by your "current updates" on the roads and weather condition. invariably, you were a "virtual" member of our group so thanks a ton for the time that you spent updating me and other fellow travellers.

I'd recommend that you spend a day at Sarahan. The Bhimkali Temple and the pheasant breeding centre are worth seeing.
Stay at HPTDC's Srikhand Cottage or Hotel.
Next stay should be at Chitkul.
Then one night at Kalpa and on to Nako.
Nako to Tabo, visiting Gye on the way. Stay at Tabo.
Then Dhankar Monastery and Pin Valley drive through and night at Kaza.
Visit Kibber, Gette, Komic etc.. and proceed to Losar. Next day Losar to Manali.
