delhi, golden triangle, amritsar, wagah, shimla, varanasi - best route?
We are travelling to india next year and want to vist the following places in approximately 8-10 days. Delhi, agra, jaipur, amritsar, wagah, shimla, varanasi. Would this journey be best undertaken by train? What would be the best way to make this trip - in which order - to get the benefit of the time we have? Any information would be greatly appreciated? Would it be better to undertake this journey ourselves or enlisting the aid of a travel agent in india? Would flying be a better option? Any advice.......?

Welcome to IM.
Do you have a itinerary in place ..? I personally feel 8-10 days is too less for all these places.. Would be better if you can reduce the number of places and increase your stay at each place.. |

Hello
thank you for you reply - do you think it would be possible to do that trip in 2 weeks? i do not have an itinerary as i dont know which is the best way round to visit? I know that these are the places we would like to visit but do not know which would be the best way round in terms of making the most of the time we have while still being able to appreciate it all! |

![]() Well, too crammed.. I am not sure you will be able to enjoy your trip. And since this is your first time.. spend time in a place.. absorbing it, rather than sightseeing... Just do Jaipur, Ajmer, Jaiselmer, Delhi and Agra. This with difficulty will fit 8-10 days.

Of your list, which are the places you would really really like to see?
I'm going to assume you're flying in and out of Delhi. I would say in 10 days Delhi - Jaipur - Agra - Amritsar (for Wagah) - Delhi would be doable by train. In 15 days I did Delhi - Chandigarh - Shimla - Mandi - Dharamsala - Amritsar - Delhi - Agra - Delhi. That takes in 4 of your listed places and is definitely possible in 15 days with a car and driver and a couple of train rides. Do note though that you'd have time to see the main sights, but not really soak up much atmosphere, so it depends what you're there for! |

Hiya
Because India is so vast and there is so much to take in, do and see etc - to be honest this being our first trip we are looking more to see the sights first. The list of places are really the places we would love to see - believe me the original list was a lot longer!! A lot of tours offer extra leisure time etc - and we would rather just travel on to the next place so that is why we though it may well be possible. What we dont know is which is the best way round to do it and in what order to gain the most from our time in India. Im beginning to imagine there may well be no answer to this one!!! ![]() |

There is always an answer ,the problem can be conforming to it .
the first question is finance (more of a polite term then just Money ) If you have the cash , hire a car and driver for the full term and see how far you can get .Fly , possible i think ,but still to tight a schedule . Realistic (in my terms )Have a look at a map ,Varanasi is in one direction , Amritsar opposite direction ,so first decision ,which destinations to leave for your next trip ,to miss any is a shame but time dictates. Delhi ,and a tour out to the Taj . One day ,all that is required .From Delhi head up to Jaiselmer ,to get the quick feel of the desert ,from there to Amritsar to be stunned by the temple and out to Wagah if you must . From there up to Shimla for a brief taste of the mountains ,back to Delhi and home .Still not enough time ,but if you want to fund me i could do a trial run for you,and for sure have a cracking good time ![]() |
