delh-amritsar-sringar-leh-delhi

we fly into Delhi the end of june, 2008 for 3 weeks. We were thinking of going to Amritsar, perhaps by train, and then on to Sringar and from there overland to Leh and then fly back to delhi for a couple of days to go south and see the Taj.

Any advice on our itinerary? and/or advice how best to travel from delhi to amritsar and then on to Sringar would be appreciated. we are 4 50+ year old of moderate means.
Are there any flights from Amritsar to Sringar? other places we could stay for a few days in the north?
Is Jammu a nice place to visit?
Thanks David

too much ground too little time. The Taj is very close to delhi and is not in the south.

srinigar-leh road is easy altitude wise but the real fun is on the manali-leh road. you should consider taking that if you are up for it. but must go slow and acclimatize. both roads have superb scenery.

you can get to sringar from jammu. there are trains upto jammu. you are really missing a lot of beautiful parts of HP...i'd spend time exploring some of these areas if i were you.

happy travelling

how about this instead?

Delhi
Train from Delhi to Shimla, the hill station
Shimla to Manali by bus or rented taxi (also spend a couple of days in Manali. I think Manali is a little bit higher)
Manali to Leh by rented jeep-(over some very high passes-I believe about a two day trip but by then we should be fairly well acclimatized)
Leh (spend around a week looking around)
drive or fly from Leh to Sringar
spend about a week around Sringar and Kashmir-maybe a houseboat
fly back to Delhi from Sringar
take train for a day to Taj mahal

Smile Jammu for not long

Big itinerary. Jammu has little to offer. House boats in Srinigar are very variable. Suggest you contact Peakmark Adventures peakmarkadventures@gmail.com to book you a nice houseboat at very moderate price. They can also help you with the rest of your itinerary. Very good people with very reasonably rates or more if you can afford. In Leh suggest T. Wangchuk Shali explorehimalayas@vsnl.com . He is very kind honest person...You need these sorts of contacts in India. Good luck

Jammu has little to offer! Because Lonely Planet says so?
In fact, the Jammu hills offer many hidden gems like Sanasar, Kud, Patnitop, Mantalai, Sud Mahadev, Kishtwar and Bhadarwah.
The last two places will soon be directly connected by road to the Kashmir valley. All the places are acceccible by good roads by private or share taxis and buses.

Jammu has little to offer

Actually when I was there the Jammu Srinigar Road was closed, but I have heard it is a very scenic drive to Srinagar. I forgot there is a Big pilgrimage site to the Devi on a mountain outside Jammu. There are also a few temples if you are into that sort of thing.

Jammu has little to offer because I stayed there several days and viewed it's atractions. It has nothing to do with Lonely planet.

There are more things around later in the year, the time you are going, bu Jammu itself is a very dirty polluted city like many in India. The hings you cite are not in Jammu, bu outside Jammu.
