Cochin to Dharamsala in 3 days?

Apart from flying into Delhi and catching the overnight bus to Dharam, would be the best (and hopefully interesting) way to get from Cochin to Dharamsala (hope to leave Mar 6 arrive Mar 9)?

I see cheap flights to Delhi, but arrive in Delhi at 1am, and don't feel comfortable arriving at that time.

I'm a India newbie, Cochin is my first stop, but am used to long distance travel?

Organize your Hotel to send a car and driver to pick you up at the airport (au$15) and then 1am is no problem!

Delhi is an amazing city and well worth a couple of days.

The only train alternative is the Rajdhani to Delhi, The Rajdhani is one of India premier trains and is much faster than normal trains, all meals are included in the price, the Rajdhani also takes the more scenic Konkan route and is well timed for your dates.

Train 2431 departs Ernakulam Jn (also known locally as Ernakulam South) at 22.35 on March 6th, and gets to H. Nizamuddin (Delhi) at 12.35 on the 8th.

There are only 2 ways to get availability on this train for 6th March.

There are 2 berths remaining in 2-tier air con (Rs 3025), but these berths are on the foreign tourist quota, you'll have to go to the foreign tourist desk in the reservation centre (probably at Ernakulam Jn station, though maybe at Ernakulam Town station, I don't know) and book there, you need to pay in Foreign currency or have an encashment certificate or an ATM receipt.

There are also 3 tier air con (Rs 2745) berths available using the Tatkal quota, but these berths will have to be booked from Trivandrum to Delhi, and state that you'll board the train at Ernakulam Jn, you can book these at any reservation centre.

The 2-tier air con tickets are much better value for money, there would normally be a big difference in the fares, but the 3-tier tickets have to be booked from Trivandrum, then they have a Rs300 Taktal charge added, that’s why the fare for 3-tier is so high, but Rajdhani fares in general are higher than ordinary fares as they're better trains and have all meals included in the price.

If you choose this option, can you let us know where you book the foreign tourist quota tickets, there isn't a list of booking locations anywhere on the net, so any info is always useful.

Thanks for the detailed advice, but I'm so taken with Cochin, that I decided to fly to Delhi, so I can spend the of extra days in this lovley fishing port, rather than on the train.
Fort Kochi is a wonderful welcome to India.
