Hi Everyone

We are travelling for a wedding in April 09 and have managed to finally get 5 days to ourselves! We have finally decided this route.

Fly from Chennai to Cochin on 30 March. Stay in Cochin on 30th and 31st March.

Car from Cochin to Munnar 1st April. Leave Munnar on 2nd April.
We arent sure what the best way to get from Munnar to Trichy yet.

Stay in Trichy 2nd and 3rd of April and fly back to Chennai on the 4th of April.

Is this much too ambitious? My questions specifically are:

-In Cochin - am I better to stay in Fort Cochin or in Ernakkulam? We would like to do a boat cruise (4-6 hours) and watch the Kathakali dancers. Any advice on accommodation (aircon and hot water) would be appreciated.

- Accomodation in Munnar is also needed aircon and hot water would be appreciated. Is car the best way to do this or bus? How much should we pay in a car for this?

- Best way to get from Munnar to Trichy? And associated costs for this travel?

I thank you guys in advance as I know there is so many questions in this post.

1 day in Munnar may not be enough. There is plenty to see in Munnar. I would suggest an extra day. Mind you, its a good 4-5 hours drive from Cochin - Munnar. So if you start early in the day, it will be lunch time by the time you reach.

Accommodation wise, it's difficult since you haven't mentioned your budget. But you can try Hotel Renaissance in Cochin. Its about 20 km from the airport. I think I paid Rs 1,700 per night. It's pretty much in the middle of the town. So most things are a short auto ride away.

In Munnar, there is no dearth of options. Once again, i stayed at Tea County which is a state run resort. Nice accommodation at reasonable prices.

Check out their web site for more up to date info. www.ktdc.com

Not sure about Munnar - Trichy trip. Wait for someone else to help you.

Thanks so much for your reply. Our budget would be 2000 INR max on accommodation. We would be extremely happy for the 1500 INR per night.

How did you get to Munnar from Cochin? Bus or car?

We booked our entire trip through KTDC. They have resorts all over Kerala. They provide you a car and a driver for the duration of the trip.

G&T,

From Munnar, for comfort, you could hire a car until Theni Atleast and from there , Numerous buses are available to Dindugal and from Dindugal again, there are so frequent buses to Trichy . This is the Shortest route !

If you are on budget,From Munnar you could get bus to Theni / Dindugal followed by Trichy bound bus.The Route is scenic with Nice weather in Munnar to Cumbum and From Cumbum /Theni it's just Plains and Roads are in excellent condition.

By Bus, Munnar to Trichy might take nearer to 7 - 8 hours!.

Also, For Cochin-Munnar Circuit also buses are so frequent and there is no compelling need for Cab as such !. We did Munnar to Kothamangalam by public bus [ 4 years back] and it was 58 Rs and 4 1/2 hours travelling time !

Hope this helps

Hi Velu

Thanks so much.

I think then we should do Cochin to Munnar by bus and then on the way back get a car to drive us back from Munnar to Theni and then bus is the rest of the way to Trichy like you said. This sounds like the shortest way.

Sorry for all these questions but :

- will i have to book the car from Munnar to Theni ahead of time or can i do it in Munnar? How much should i allow?

Cheers.

G&T,

Infact, Munnar to Theni also, there are hourly buses and in Munnar Bus stand you could get Token [For 5 Rs which will give a confirmed seat in the bus in Day time - This Logic is applicable only in Peak Season Months] [ We did it other way . In Theni Bus stand, we got this token and occupied the seat without any difficulty for Munnar around March month and there were "Signboards in Engligh" for Munnar bound buses in this bus stand].

You could try that and incase it's overcrowded , you could hire a cab until "Theni" !.

Please be aware , buses in Munnar-Theni circuit is of Normal 3 + 2 [Seating Arrangement] with No Push-Back possible and it's NOT Non-Stop kind of bus !.

And On Cab Fare , I don't have an idea BUT there are "N" number of Tourist Cabs lying near the Bus stand itself !You could take a call once you reach there. [May be after seeing the bus condition and options] .

Hope this helps

Just a thought as your stay in Munnar will be short.....

Car & driver to Munnar, keep him to show you around, then go back with him to Cochin and get the well timed overnight train to Trichy, (dep 22.15, arr 08.00).

3-tier air con will cost Rs 531 per person, so the cost of keeping the driver for an extra day will be recouped by not having to pay for a hotel for that night.

You have to pay for his return journey in any case, and you'll lose virtually no daylight hours using this strange route.
.
SOS: Missing Person...

Please look at this thread, even if you are not in India.: Have you seen Jonathan Spollen?

He could be anywhere now: You might have met him, be able to help, or give information.

Hello there

I'm visiting from Malaysia. Been to south india few times. But this will be my first time in Kerala.

Here is my tentative plan.

26th July
- Arrival at cochin international airport 10.35pm
- taxi to fort cochin & check in to hotel

Q: Best option is hire taxi for Rs750 or any other options available? any hotels that provide pick up?

27th July
- Day trip to Thrissur temple & ernakulam temple
- Sight seeing around fort cochin

Q: Can all this be squeezed into a single day or am i over ambitious?

28th July
- Travel up to Munnar
- Tea plantation tour, sandalwood forest tour, Mattupetty Lake and Dam
- either spend the night in munnar or thekkady

Q: What's the suggested travel option between cochin-munnar?

29th July
- full day trip to Sabarimala
- travel down to Allepey

Q: I was informed that males can visit the temple but its a 2 hour hike. But unable to find any info on the travel route. Will i be able to visit the temple or is it closed during this period?

30th July
- backwaters cruise in allepey
- evening train to Kanyakumari

Q: which is better to travel with - bus/train?

31st July
- enjoy the sights of Kanyakumari
- get on evening train to tiruchi

1st August
- spend the day relaxing in family village

My main question is about the sabarimalai temple entrance. Any car for hire service providers that you guys can recommend for the round trip instead of taking a bus between the places?

See http://www.ayyappatemple.in/temple-calendar.html

If you planning on hiring a car you could consider Indian Panorama.
