Chennai - Pondicherry - Kanyakumari

This route seems really nice by the sounds of it. I was wondering how far it would take from these places and how much it would cost to have a driver on this route who can take us to Kanyakumari and then on to the nearest airport so that we can fly to Delhi?

What can one see/do in these areas?

We did something like this 2 years back, but we started from Coimbatore and ended at Chennai. The AC Qualis cost us Rs 8.50 per km (minimum 250Km per day) and we had to pay for the return trip (Chennai to Coimbatore).
IMO, it may be better to end at Madurai and fly back from there itself, and leave Kanyakumari out of this trip.
You could do something like: Chennai - Mahabalipuram - Pondicherry - Chidambaram - Kumbakonam- Tanjore- Trichy - Madurai (and maybe a round trip to Kodai from Madurai or to Rameswaram)
So you get to see some great beaches (Chennai - Pondi stretch), beautiful temples (chidambaram- madurai stretch), mountains and greenery (kodai) and maybe a stopover at the Theme park near chennai.
And lots of great vegitarian food at unbelievable prices all over the place.

That sounds good.

Pondicherry is very close to Chennai, just three hours drive, whereas Kanyakumari is a long way away. Rajeev' suggestions for filling in the gaps sound tempting. It is a trip I haven't done, however I've visited Kanyakumari and Maduri.

Even Chidambaram is only a further couple of hours from Pondicherry --- in fact we ever so nearly did that trip today, but, in the end, came home instead.
